What with the huge amount of nabs getting useless degrees, you need one to work in retail these days.
Charging huge amounts so only the rich can get degrees isn't the solution to this either.
My point is though, given that everyone has access to loans it doesn't limit anything. So previously you paid off 15k over 10 years? Now you pay off 30k over 20 years. I don't see why that would stop anyone going.

Too much logic. Not enough anger.

It's the price of a car.

You go to college to increase your income when you graduate do you not? That's an investment. 15k is nothing when your income is probably increased by that much on a yearly basis just for holding a piece of paper.

Better question: What's the average yearly income for college graduates in the UK?

I agree, but only if you're thinking of it in terms of a lump sum. If you're thinking of it in terms of you pay off a insignificant amount of your income for twice as long, what difference does it really make? Am I being dense here, is there an argument here I'm missing?

You're probably arguing with someone that views the price of a video game as being high. He has no perspective. To him, 15k is a shitload of money.

Can't afford the fees?  Blame your parents for not providing enough, or get a fuck'in job to pay for it.

Visited one of the prep schools I'm considering for my son.  Paltry merit scholarships, and even then, significant sacrifices to maintain them.  But then, tons of needs scholarship.  Fuck that!!!
what does a shitty prep school have to do with anything? and isn't it ironic that you complain about costs straight after encouraging the parents to cough up? oooookay. i think the students are angry that the good principle of our education-accessibility is being sacrificed as part of austere financial measures that have NOTHING to do with the student population. why are we paying for the older generation's foolish mistakes and avarice?
Because shit always gets kicked down hill. Over on this side of the pond, my generation is going to end up paying off all the debt the baby boomers racked up. Then we get to pay for their retirement on top of it. Fun stuff.
Well, we don't have to...   That's something worth revolting over.

23.5k is the average graduates income.
The point i'm trying to make is that it's a large increase, one that will put off average/poorer students. Assuming you've got no money going into this you're loaning 9k for tuition fees plus another 6 or 7 for accommodation etc.
45k debt for the rest of your life to pay off seems like quite a large chunk to me.

@galt: i suppose 15k is just spare change to you?

So... ask your parents to do their job and help pay for your schooling?

i know a lot of parents that would argue that, after putting their child through top private education from age 8-18, they should get into their own fucking debt when it comes to university. paying £20 grand a year to put a kid through public school is enough of the 'parental duties', methinks, let alone the £35k+ for university study.
