* pride

anyways, being a recovering addict myself, i can tell you the call is strong and never very far. what keeps it away is someone elses trust and confidence in you, and a desire to see tomorrow.

do past drug addicts consider themselves as being in a state of 'recovery' all their lives? never really thought about that

seeing as drug-abuse is a potential risk and a temptation for everybody, in the right situation

i guess you'll never 'recover'

At least the last feel good story, Captain C.B. Sully Sullenberger, we knew he wasn't going to be doing lines off a hookers thigh within a year.

sure you can - i've recovered (most) of my health, my family, my right mind. it's just by being addicted at one time, you've opened yourself up to the allure of the high, and the trick is to think of the downside.

because evry fucking high has one.

I've heard that.. that nobody ever really "quits", so to speak. The chances of getting back in to the habit is high once you've had a taste. .. or more.

You have to recognize that the chances of slipping into the habit is compounded once you have already been there. It is also more challenging for certain types of personalities.

i've hardly been down some of the paths others have, but even with cigarettes it's like that. It took me a few 'quits' before I really decided to quit for good. So far I've avoided temptation to light one up, even with my smoker friends. The temptation probably never fully goes away. But I think it does get to a point where you can say no to it every time.

No. not every time, but don't put yourself in a position to say "yes".

as much as i enjoy traveling and taking pictures, i'll never go to Colombia or Bolivia . . .

You really can't compare cigarettes to drug and alcohol abuse. Every substance has a purpose. Cigarettes aren't going to give a thirty minute feel good high. The reasons people get addicted varies. We are biochemically unique, as are our life circumstances. That is why I hate it when people instantly judge others. Truthfully they have no idea. It's a sickening arrogance.

I wasn't really comparing them, I know they're nowhere near other drugs, hence the first sentence in my post...

add religion to the mix, and - yeah. i left home almost thirty years ago, and it's just been a couple, and the fact that my folks moved near me, to come home again.

i agree with Uzique though - this story illustrates the opportunity we enjoy living here.

i'd be willing to bet Mr. Williams was running from himself. you can't conquer an addiction until you catch up to yourself, like a horse that's running away.

sometimes, it takes a couple of tries to slow the horse down.
