Here I thought MI was the only state that thought this was a good idea. 20 percent decrease in travel time, 46 percent fewer reported traffic collisions, and 63-percent fewer accidents that result in personal injury seems to speak for itself. Would you want the streets in your area transformed like this?

Waiting to turn left is the waste of fuel because I have to idle and then burn fuel getting back up to speed. Having grown up in MI, you can go through the intersection you'd normally turn left, go up a bit, flip a u-turn, hang a right turn much faster than waiting for traffic to clear or the light to change.

You break into corners and accelerate out, you don't have to go idle...

And u-turns are are still dangerous to perform. Accidents will still happen.

This. I hate pulling u-turns even where they're legal. And as demonstrated by the sketch, opposing traffic is uncontrolled. 0.o

Also, commercial traffic would be FUCKED. Got a trailer? Fuck you. And also, you'd have to retrain drivers to expect more left turn blockage than there already is. The extra signs required and the extra asphalt maintenance for the 'wide' u-turns and the concrete islands in the middle of the intersection...fuck that.

Stepping off the soap box, I don't think now is a very good time to consider massive remodeling jobs like this. Municipal governments should focus on repairing what infrastructure they already have.

The best thing to do with this kind of intersection is to A: Leave it the fuck alone and possibly slightly lower main road speed for the intersection area. B: Round-a-fucking-bout....

It actually works. In higher traffic areas they will put a traffic signal at the point of the turn-about to give you an opportunity to merge during peak time. It isn't as complicated as it looks. I swear.

It's still a waste of space, time & designing when a roundabout / lowered passing speed would solve the problem just the same...

yeah, I guess I just noticed that. We don't prevent the side street from going through...I guess this particular model is trying to eliminate the traffic signal altogether.

You are right guys, a roundabout would work better for removing a traffic signal. But I swear these michigan lefts work for removing the left turn at busy intersections.
