Hello kiddies,

So my laptop has been doing this a fair bit of late.

Fans start whirring away, feels like its running a bit hot (hot air out the vents). It doesn't feel overly hot, but i can't really say the inside isn't getting hot!

Then the laptop shuts off.

Reason I think it's overheating is due to googling the problem.

I've ordered some arctic silver thermal paste, thermal paste cleaner, compressed air can, and some lint free cloth. Basically I was planning to clean the inside of my laptop, clean the old thermal paste from my CPU (must be about 3 or 4 years old now!), and apply the new one.

Do you guys think that there is anything else I should do?

you looked inside, everything else is clean and no obstruction to air flow?

vacuum it

... this was a serious suggestion. My laptop was running really hot so i vacuumed out the air intakes / exhausts ... worked like a charm. I'd do that before taking anything apart or worrying about thermal paste and shit

Looked inside the easy access compartments, which are where quite a lot of the exits are, no blockages i could see, didnt wanna completely dismantle my laptop yet though cos I'm meant to be revising! haha

Licky, I swear I read before that you shouldnt vacuum it due to static from the moving dust/air particles?

That's just over-protective nerd rage. Vacuum the shit outta that mofo. If that doesn't work (it will) then breaking it down and reapplying paste and all that jazz will definitely do it.

Dunno. I've done it plenty of times to plenty of different computers. I've never had any trouble.

I'm always careful not to touch any of the exposed circuit boards/etc with the nozzle, though.

I reapplied the thermal paste on my laptop which is almost 3 years old... the thermal paste had dried up like cement; I had to scrape it off because it was so hard, but my temps dropped by more than half, and it gets barely warm to the touch when it was near burning and uncomfortable to touch or even use on my lap.
