Hey Bf2s, I come to you once again seeking suggestion.  Tech has never lead me wrong, and after my last post looking for a TV, You guys picked out an excellent one and Im loving it thus far.

Any ways, Im looking at getting a laptop after my mass amount of overtime ends, and im looking at one in the price range of about $800-$1000USD, although I would prefer to stay as close to $800 as possible.  My budget has a bit of leeway but only if its really worth it.

Looking at something with a 15-16" screen, although there rooms for variance on that.

Want something I can game on obviously, Most demanding game id probably ever try playing on it is Black Ops, or maybe BC2.  If it can handle those at decent settings and speed Id love that.  Other than that, basic use, web surfing, movies, etc.  Nothing amazing.

I have been looking at a lot of laptops, and at this point torn between a Dell Inspirion and the HP DVT series.  PArt of the fact is I get a discount on them through work, the other being both configurations for $850 Get me an I5, and 1GB Video cards of good power, and on the HP at least 6GBs of ram.  Was looking at the Sony Vaios, but fuck me.  Sonys prices are a bit crazy for the same hardware.

Im open to any brand however, as long as its a decent build and computer.  Anything you guys can suggest is more than welcome.

Any questions, toss them at me.

Thanks in advance guys

Well I recently bought a Dell Studio XPS 16 (i5 540M, 1GB HD5730, 8GB 1333Mhz RAM, 640GB harddrive, 1080p screen) and I must say I am very please with the performance. It plays MW2, Black Ops and BC2 about as well as i'd except a laptop to. Its perfectly playable and the screen is very nice. Its battery life isn't fantastic, but for those specs it is surprisingly good. So I can recommend Dell (so far).

With that price range you aren't going to get a great gaming laptop (not that gaming and laptop really go together anyway), but i'd take a look at the Dell XPS 15.

We are up to like one of these threads every month with the same retarded floppy not reading the OP then recommending something overpriced only because he has one.

I love how you immediately say overpriced to it just because it was a Sony...

It was the best value money could buy when I got it and is still in the top of the list...

Not to mention the only negative thing I can say about it is that the lid scratches abit easily...

Knew the vaio was going to come up, in my research of related threads I saw the same argument.  Reason threads like this come up is due to different needs and requirements then people in other threads.  Reason I post is bf2s has never lead me wrong

Regardless, Sony is nice, but at the price point its a terrible buy.  For the $800-900 I can get a very nice HP or Dell, where as sony gets me a half of that.  I'd love to go Sony, but not gonna pay near double for the same parts.

Had honestly consider the mx11 from alienate(boo alienware I know) but I wanted a bigger screen.

From the review earlier and others I've read online, strongly considering an XPS or Inspiron, as for the money they spec well, and seem to be a good value.  Anyone have some experience with either? Maybe have some ideas of lifespan and such on them?

I have a Dell Studio XPS 16 and am very displeased.. have had nothing but issues. RMA'd for parts twice, sometimes the processor is a cunt and just downclocks itself and hangs there.

It's also heavy as shit.

Your mileage may vary. /shrug

This is NOT TRUE, go look it up.. The i5 E-series is cheaper than a similarly specced Dell or HP shitbox

Dang that sucks. Haven't had any of the issues you mentioned (although it is heavy).
Bevo do you travel with your laptop alot? How old is it?  have you hit it or bumped it? they should make these more durable :<

There is a laptop on woot.com right now for only $600.  I am not making any claims to whether it is worth it or not...but check it out.  It will only be there for today or until it sells out.  Hurry!  go go go

Bit at the high range for prices, but does look good, although I'm sure I could do a similar omen cheaper.  But I do have a lenevo discount, ill check their site later on that model.

Thanks though.  Karma all around when I get home, if anyone still cares about it.  Wish I could offer something better, maybe a game on steam to whoever suggestion I buy

Edit:

Did some shopping around today.

A. What with Intel HD Graphics?  Cruddy onboard I assume?

B.Is Acer a good brand as far as laptops go?

once upon a midnight dreary, while i pron surfed, weak and weary, over many a strange and spurious site of ' hot  xxx galore'. While i clicked my fav'rite bookmark, suddenly there came a warning, and my heart was filled with mourning, mourning for my dear amour, " 'Tis not possible!", i muttered, " give me back my free hardcore!"..... quoth the server, 404.

Not really, as long as its black, or a dark color.  All I really want in that regard, and maybe a full keyboard if that counts

I'd only take it on long trips, and it would always be in my backpack. It's coming up on 3 years now, but I've had issues since day 1.

I don't think there was any damage to anything as every bloody part on this computer has been exchanged save the GPU and CPU. The motherboard has been exchanged twice.

This thing now only sits on my desk (next to my desktop) and I use it as a media player. I bought an Asus 12" netbook about a month ago and now that's what I take with me to class and stuff. It's lovely. $500, 3 pounds, 6 hour battery, big enough to be usable and powerful enough to do anything I'd need it to.

I have two media-rated HP laptops for the office that haven't failed on me yet. One's even been dropped twice by my dad, but still runs like a dream.

HP ENVY 15-1066nr NoteBook Intel Core i7 720QM(1.60GHz) 15.6" 6GB Memory 500GB HDD 7200rpm DVD Super Multi ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4830
$950 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6834157581

HP Pavilion dv7-4180us NoteBook Intel Core i5 460M(2.53GHz) 17.3" 4GB Memory 640GB HDD 5400rpm BD Combo ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650
$1000 http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6834157441

Of the two, I would probably recommend the second one. Even though the 5400 HDD is kind of weak, you could always swap it later.

What max said. Their specs are flashy, but they have a notoriously low reliability, and two of my RL buddies have had them fail in a relatively short period of time (~<2 yrs).

I'd have a look at Sager
Two of my mates have bought these, and said nothing but goood things. Amazing value, great build quality and exceptional after-sales service (drivers, etc...)

you'd probably want the NP 5160.

Wayyyy to pricy for my tastes honestly.

however I think Ive got my laptop.

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … -_-Product

Local store has it for $800, and its a perfect fit for my price range, and Ive heard good things about lenevos.  Seems like a good deal, doesnt have a keypad, but for my price point I love it.

Lenovos are awesome. Had an SL since '09 and love it. Virtually indestructible, very powerful.

I bought a Dell Inspiron 15R. Couldn't be happier with it, came with 4GB RAM, i3, 320GB HD, HD (720p) Glossy Monitor, Awesome design, 1.3 Mp webcam, full sized keyboard incl num.pad. Not to mention the graphics, ATI Radeon mobility 5650 for 600 Euro. I can't fault it, the sound is awesome too.
