Did a search, no recent threads on this, figured I'd start a new one.

I'm learning the bass. I'm not taking formal lessons but I found something online that looks good for the basics at least. I'm also just looking up tabs and trying to work them out, it's pretty fun.

Used to play electric guitar but that never really went anywhere, and I also used to play violin.

How about you guys?

Drums, percussion & Tin Whistle.

After the drums, obviously! The bass is the coolest instrument on stage. Bass & drums provide the backbone to everyband. When I look out and see a couple of people or a couple of hundred dancing to our music, its the bass & drums the crowd follow. The drums provide the beat, the bass the groove. Something very powerful in making people move on a dancefloor, lifting them up and down, teasing them, making them freekout.

A drum teacher I played gigs with, learnt from and eventually tutored students alongside with would say to young guitarists "Do you know what you are? You're a hood ornament. The real band is the rhythm section".

Tried this for a while. It was something like; bumm bumm bumm whoops. bumm bummm bum bummm whoops.

I managed to learn 2 songs before I got bored on picking the strings alone in my flat. KoRn - Blind and Rammstein - Wollt Ihr Das Bett In Flammen Sehen.

Also I had a couple Technics SL-1200 turntables and the mixer for playing groovy hard house but that prolly don't count as instrument in this case.

God I miss those turntables Had great fun with them.

Good move. I have been playing drums for 18 years and 2 things held me back from getting studio work. I have the skills but I cant read music or play a guitar or piano. If you can do either then you have a much better chance or understanding the artist you are trying to accompany if you understand the structure musically.
Another thing is take singing lessons. I have lost loads of session work over the years to less competent drummers who could sing. So if the drumming wasn't too demanding but they require backing vox then a lesser drummer would get the job if the drumming isn't too taxing.
Also take lessons. I have only started now after 18 years and I wish I had from day one as I have taught myself some really bad habits which have also held me back. Ive tried a few videos over the years. But the JoJo Mayer "secret weapons for a modern drummer" is the best DVD I have seen. Well worth getting if you serious about drumming. Plus JoJo is just amazing, but humble with it.

I've played the Drums for almost 10 years now (was taught by various pro's). Got up to a pretty good standard and have played in a shitload of bands playing Jazz, Latin, Classical, Metal (Progressive/Death), Punk, Rock and most recently Military Drum Corps. Unfortunately I can't have my kit (Which I have sunk over $10,000 into) on campus so I don't get to play as much any more

I also play Guitar, but was taught by my brother/am self taught so I am not so great at it
