There is a lot of jumping in this game too.
Jumping has been a key element of the series since the first game, so nothing unexpected.

am expecting there to be some sort of decrease in functionality between AoE2 and AoE2 HD. . Scenario maker will probably be gone or something else.

i would happily pay £20 for a simple reskin and textural 'bringing up to date' of:

cod1/cod2
tfc
bf2
wow

don't even change a thing. don't edit the engine, the code, the map designs, the weapons, anything. minimal work. get your art/graphics department on a quick texture update, patch the engine as needs fit to be able to load/run updated visuals... and re-release, for £20 smackers. i predict millions of disillusioned pc gamers will come back.

that's why, where i'd normally complain and call foul this age of empires re-release as the most cynical and disgusting turn of the screw in the entire history of corporate gaming bullshit yet... in this case, i'm willing to let it slide. if this new lame and lazy cashing-in of old game titles with 'HD' versions catches on with the suits at major game companies/publishers, i'm more than willing to swallow the bullshit if it means some great games get reshelved.

cod1/cod2 nurtured a generation of the best fps gamers/community tbh. he needs to nuance his argument. too many idiots refer to 'call of duty' with the myopic history of console kiddies.

The $20 HD games are kinda of admitting you don't have anything else to go on. Why release a $20 HD BF2 if you can still make money pumping out $15 DLC and keep your AAA game alive. If you have a $60 game lined up there is no good reason to hook a good portion of your potential audience to a cheaper game.

Some good points.
too bad ro2 itself is a buggy mess, especially for ladder play, with config exploits, people getting booted for low settings, and whatnot.

As long as we're on a update and re-release good games trip, System Shock 2 and early Thief games would be

Also Trotsky, I've been playing RO2 since I bought it when it had a freekend on Steam a while back and haven't experienced any of those issues. The worst thing at present is so few people play it. Most servers play Realism too, which reminds me of good CoD2 hardcore mode.

RO2 is nowhere near cod2. the movement and engine are horrible. you can NOT make a competitive game out of an fps that feels so fundamentally bulky and 'restricted'. and i don't mean out of 'hurr durr carrying weight' realism - it's just not a smooth running engine. just like for the same reason bf3, all balance and learning curve aside, couldn't really be a proper competitive fps game. something about the engine's movement and animations just made it feel borked, too heavy. most modern games tend to be like this, for some reason... gone is the fine 300fps quake/unreal engine gliding of the early call of duty or source engine games. now you're trapped in a nightmare of lower fps and terrible responsiveness.

i hate games journalists who write articles like the above - people who profess to have some 'inner' knowledge but then just end up spouting an opinion hardly a nickle above the standard black ops console kiddie it stakes a supercilious stance towards.

well if the engine ran smoother, would said "momentum" movement mechanics really be a hinderance to competitive? I just see it as being different, even CS has a slight delay for acceleration in movement anyways (sv_accelerate and whatnot)

CS still feels responsive, though. i hate these games that make you feel bulky. in CS you can still turn around and whip-shot someone. in some games, for e.g. playing support in bf3, they've made it feel like you're literally swinging around some mass. ok, fair enough, it's about as neat as the suppression mechanic when it comes to 'realistic' or 'immersive' gameplay. but for competitive it is total junk.

We're looking for different things in games. I know you've said you played CS/TF2 competitively in the past. I absolutely hate CS because of the sort of 180-quick scope/no scope mechanics that you end up having to employ. Dont get me wrong either, RO2 definitely has a lot more problems than I mentioned, and I agree with you that it isn't fit for any sort of competitive league, but I still find it good fun.

well i've played games like cod1/cod2 competitively as well, and even bf2, which was just so shit at movement that the whole competitive scene was basically based around exploiting the shit movement as best as possible, as best as whatever-patch allowed. it does make a huge difference. i'm sure RO is very thrilling and very immersive and whatnot - i only really played the first one for more than 20 hours - but it's just crap as competitive. you have to remember: competitive needs a high skill curve, and it needs a little bit of flashiness and room to shine. especially in today's esports model, where everything is based on spectating and thus advertising revenue. who the fuck would want to watch a RO2 match? please. give me tf2 airshots anyday.
