A mate wants to build a new gaming PC, his budget is $2,000 AUD.

We'll be getting everything from this site simply because it's the cheapest and best: http://umart.com.au/newindex2.phtml?bid=2

A few things to note:

*He doesn't need a new keyboard, mouse or soundcard
*He prefers an AMD CPU
*He wanted an Acer monitor but I think I convinced him the LG is better

Here it is anyway:

https://static.bf2s.com/files/user/52172/Chrispy%20PC%20build.png

I recommended a SSD for his OS and program installs, and the 2TB for storage. Not entirely necessary, but cool.
6GB RAM should be plenty for now.
Dunno if the 750W PSU is a bit of overkill...
I know Samsung > all at the price point, but that LG looks great, especially with the 3 year pixel-perfect warranty.
I figured a hex core is future proofing over a quad.

Any improvements or things I've missed or do not need, let me know, thanks.

Well then, what would you recommend at the same price point from Intel? Best I can see is an i5. Could trim some costs in a few other areas and get an i7...

He doesn't have a preference. The 6970 was my recommendation from some reviews (including benchmarking) I've been reading on guru3d.com, for example - http://www.guru3d.com/article/radeon-69 … -review/22

Anything like a 580 or 5970 is just blowing the budget out a bit too much and sacrificing in other areas IMO. But I'm open to any suggestions.

This would be my suggestion (I didnt use umart because the website frustrates me so much lol)

+DVD drive

This is one of the best price/performance build at the moment. Obviously since of the problem with the chipset he can either use the 6gbps ports now or wait for the new boards. I realise this is annoying so feel free to ignore my advise and go for a intel 1366 build lol.

E: obviously if he doesn't want to overclock you can get rid of the CPU cooler and go with the 2500 instead of the K version.

If he absolutely wants AMD CPU, then... btw 6GB ram is not going to end up well with dual channel.

Phenom II X6 1090T
Coolink Corator DS
Gigabyte GA-890*something*
4GB or 8GB DDR3 1333MHz
GTX 560
Corsair HX650W // decent quality one that is available at >500w range (500w would be optimal PSU but availability sucks)
Fractal R3 case
Corsair F-series SSD (or similar sandforce based one) + Samsung F3 HDD / WD Black HDD
3930K | H100i | RIVF | 16GB DDR3 | GTX 480 | AX750 | 800D | 512GB SSD | 3TB HDD | Xonar DX | W8

Ok, so I've taken suggestions on board and come up with this:

https://static.bf2s.com/files/user/52172/chrispy%20pc%202.png
+ DVD-RW

Thoughts? Looks a better system for about the same price (forgot to add in the monitor).

I think he wants to get this machine asap, he said he's waiting on the loan approval which could be today.

I was looking specifically at this one, lots of good reviews for it - http://umart.com.au/pro/products_listne … ;sid=53828

Looks fine, just need to change the 2x2gb ram to 3x2gb ram (triple channel kit).

Aaaaannnd maybe a different hard drive. I don't know about hitachi HDs, but I'd go with a Western Digital, Samsung, or Seagate.

PS: If you have an extra $100-$200 load the OS on a SSD.

Already have an SSD on there...

I've got two Hitachi HDD, no problems at all...

Will have to either up the RAM to triple channel it seems or lower the CPU to an i5. Gotta try to keep it all within $2k

Also, someone suggested two GTX 460 in sli instead of a 6970, seems a good idea from what I can tell with price/performance. Thoughts?

Panzer had a good suggestion, I would prob go with a Asus Crosshair mobo if its about the same price as the gigabyte there.

Edit: LBJ has sandy bridge or p67 been re-released yet? I wouldnt buy until it was.

You'll have to right click the case in the menu of cases and open a new tab, the link just brings up the home page...
