So.. Is it just me or has Win7 copied the aids that was Vista networking?
I remember using XP, you would never have a problem with lan, it wasn't a hassle and it worked if your hardware worked...
I have yet to see Win7 work without problems for stuff even as basic as file-sharing...

My current problem is, that my laptop & desktop cannot find eachother on my LAN, I can ping both, and my router shows both are fully and properly connected...
5 minutes ago my laptop could see my desktop, but no more...

wtf is this shit?

I wish it would just let me fucking run regular lan sharing without all this homegroup bullshit... give me back XP filesharing kthx

Damn, I... had something for this

I have a couple of computers permanently sharing files and plenty that have come and gone temporarily and they have all worked perfectly.

All I can say is be on the same network, every computer needs passwords and I have never used homegroup.

You don't have to have a homegroup to share files. You can still do the "traditional" folder sharing. I have a selection of Vista/7 PCs on my network. 6, to be exact. File sharing works perfectly between the 7 and Vista systems. I also managed to, without any effort, make the homegroup thing work between my PC and laptop. I am yet to encounter any problems. Also I never actually had any problems with Vista, but maybe I'm just awesome like that.

I don't really know what to suggest, it's always just worked for me.

You guys must have magical versions of windows 7...

I have never experienced more than 2 PCs able to flawlessly share stuff together over LAN in win7... and atm those two are beeing bitches...

I even uninstalled Hamachi now to make sure the extra connection wasn't confusing windows... but now I'm convinced it's just windows beeing a nazi...

Every time I try to enable homegroup (I have given up on regular lan by now) my laptop says "HURR ENABLE IPv6" yet it is fully enabled -.-

They can't even fucking see the homegroup between them x_X

Also, my desktop has NEVER been able to see my Laptop over lan or even via the wireless accesspoint...

ping is not a problem, so again I am convinced this is Win7's fault...

lol

It's slower than my 22 MB/s USB HDD transfer rate

I presume you're using 100-megabit-capable-only hardware somewhere along the way, such as your router. Hence, ~11MB/s.

Everything should be capable of 100mbps which is what my lan is running according to windows...

Which is what it is doing, roughly.

I am able to see my Win 7 laptop, my Win 7computer, and an xp computer that has a printer connected to it. I can see them and access them all  from both Win 7 computers, haven't tried the XP yet. I'll admit I did have a bit of trouble at first. I'm not in a homegroup and my network type is set as Work Network on the Win 7 comps.

I just can't believe USB is over twice as fast
Time to get new router & cables I guess...

Yea I do to, and it just seems to work better for some reason. Don't ask me why.

yeah its pretty easy with 7.  i even managed to get wireless printing and scanning working flawlessly.  the only thing is i wish i had bought a dual band router cause speeds kinda suck

The only problem we've had is that you need passwords on your laptop/desktop. I haven't managed to connect to Fin's PC without having to use login credentials. So we have the same password on our pcs and my laptop to make life easier.

Use homegroup, eliminates the need to enter a password every time

In XP it was so easy...

Right-click -> Share what you wanted to share with everyone

Now it's dumbed down so much it has become complicated

That's what I do on W7. Just tested, works fine.

I think W7 may try and stop you from sharing folders in your (private) user folder (i.e. My Videos) as a way of protecting you. If you give access to a directory then you have to give access to the parent directory.* Try sharing a random folder elsewhere.

*this is guess

Ugh I really don't want to re-arrange my whole filesystem x_X

Guess I will with my next clean install then

maybe this will sound odd for some but there are also different cables that have different speed capabilities, some cannot transfer speeds required for 1gbit. Some are rated only at 100mhz, etc

The majority of networking equipment measures bandwidth in mega BITS per second.

MB = megabyte
Mb / mb = megabit

Recall that 8 megabits = 1 megabyte.

Therefore
11MBps ~ 88mbps. Don't forget that it only takes a single link in the chain running at 100mbps to make a 1000mbps (gigabit) network slow down to the lower rate. The NICs at both ends, the switch in between, the router (if it's involved; shouldn't be in this case), and all of the cabling needs to be able to run at 1000mbps and actually operating at that speed too. Furthermore, it takes some serious hardware to get wire-speed performance (i.e. to make a 1000mbps network actually transfer at that full bandwidth rate; same goes for 100mbps).

As for your networking issue, are you trying to locate your machines by name or by IP? You might want to try connecting via IP and making sure to set up DHCP reservations on your router for each computer. If you have to keep reauthenticaing to each computer (someome mentioned that above) that can be annoying as there's no domain server processing auth requests in a P2P sharing scenario.

If you're really into filesharing on your network you might consider setting up a flie server. Even an old junky computer can host and share out files easily. I'm a huge fan of Windows Home Server for that purpose, or hell you could just load XP onto it.
