Not exactly the same game, just same base-characters and maybe level design. I'd say Mario 2D, 3D, Sunshine and Galaxy are all pretty different.

E: And that's not even including Mario Kart and other 'spin-offs' (Yoshi's island, Luigi's Mansion, etc.).
