So I get back home from uni and my mom immediately has a problem. Her computer (Toshiba Satellite L300D--Vista Premium) won't boot properly.

On startup, it POSTs and goes to advance startup options. If I try normal startup, it loads for a bit and then gives me a black screen with a (movable) cursor.

If I go to safe mode, it loads a bunch of files, stops at crcdisk.sys and then gives me the same black screen with cursor.

She's currently trying to find the recovery CD, but I'm not sure how much that will help. Looks like a OS problem to me, anyways.

Shut down the laptop when you get the ugly green bars going across. Windows will see this as a failed startup and offer you Startup Repair. Choose it and it will automaticallly attempt a CHKDSK and/or System Restore.

Roger, trying now. It just gave me the option to do a restore.

Tried the restore, no success. Just brings me back to the same black screen.

Software isn't covered by warranty.

If it doesn't do it automatically, you can choose to use advanced options at the end.

Open Command Prompt.

chkdsk c: /r

I basically gave up, am installing W7HP x64 now. It was just looping over and over, I'd tried everything. Thanks.
