I'm trying to figure out if my university's oppressive internet policy is fucking with this port I need to be open. How can I tell, from inside their network whether it's open or not? Oh, and pinging doesn't work, no matter what port you try it on.

By pinging, do you mean using port-testing websites?

Chances are, it's closed.

My friend in Bristol UWE has to have every single port he wants opened done by going to the IT guys and asking them to, giving a reason for use, etc.

For every game we play. And some they just say 'no' because of 'risks'. I would hate that shit.

Like that at many uni's, some of the it admins are comp sci students though here at lancs, so open the ports that games and torrent clients use though.

Ok so I got an email back from IT saying that it's blocked because it's UDP for 'security reason'. Is there some way I can forward the port within Windows?
