Hard drive failure?

afternoon techies, just wondering if this sounds like a hard drive failure or if it can be fixed

the Acer start up screen shows, then the windows loading screen does but it won't get any further than this point. then there's a constant extremely loud high pitched noise coming from the laptop, and that's it.

any ideas/suggestions?

It could most certainly be a HDD that is failing.

If you can get into BIOS, your BIOS might be able to give you the SMART status of your HDD...

In the bios, check all the tabs, there might be a S.M.A.R.T thing which shows the status of the HDD, see if there's anything with S.M.A.R.T there

yeah, nothing and windows can't repair it if i stop it trying to boot

That's the extent of my hardware support (built my pc about 5 years ago, not fiddled with it since ;D)

a trip to currys is in order then i reckon, i'll try reformatting it first. she backs up her things regularly thankfully
