my main drive is currently at 85%, I have a few more games I want to install which will fill it past the point of it allowing me to do a proper defrag (windows defrag requires 15% free space)

My question is if I fill the drive past that point will I suffer any performance loss ?

Is there 3rd party defrag software that will allow me to defrag without there being 15% free space ?

Thank you for any info that gets posted

Defrag first then install?

i think you always need to leave a certain percentage of hardrive free.  Pagefile and shit like that.

This was my main concern since my system is a little older I need all the performance I can get.

So you think my system will suffer if i fill the hard drive beyond 85% ?

It depends on how big your drive is.  Generally you should try to keep 10-20% free for that windows pagefile (which will vary in size according to the needs of windows) or any other crap windows/programs need to cache.  You could always manually set the pagefile to a static size which worked well back in the windows 2000 era or disable it altogether but most people just leave the default let windows manage it setting.

Certainly the more filled a drive is & has the OS installed on it then performance issues are going to arise.

you should absolutely do this^. allowing your system to resize pagefile will result in it being fragmented itself, which is uber bad performance-wise. set pagefile to static size then defrag using some of the software that lets you create a bootable media (use trial version of paragon f.e.) which will defrag better than windows ever could becausle no files are in use in the process.
if you open your mind too much your brain will fall out.
why not add another drive? one of them 2 tbs

better add more ram then and turn the page file off altogether.

thanks for all the replies

I reset my pagefile size and defragged using PARAGON TOTAL DEFRAG

I have over 2TB of storage drives already, my question pertains to my main system drive which is only 300GB and currently at 82% capacity.

Thank you all for helping me
