oh wtf
I'm half way through A Clash of Kings, and just read the part where Renly Spoiler (highlight to read):
is killed by a fucking shadow. I had hoped that magic wouldn't be too over the top in this series, dragons/white walkers/etc are good plot points. Adding "magic" like this to kill a character out of the fucking blue like that seems just so cheap..
The War of the Roses theme is more interesting when characters Spoiler (highlight to read):
don't spontaneously die.

insinuating the white walkers aren't magic...
half of the series involves magic.
Spoiler (highlight to read):
And Renly's death is obviously becaude of Melisandre, who plays a major part in the series, especially in the third book. Not exactly a spontaneous death that comes for no reason.

Magic comes into the story more as it progresses. It hasn't neared absurdity yet though.AussieReaper wrote:

I said that they were good plot points. Not that they weren't "magic".Poseidon wrote:

The thing with Renly just seemed a cheap way to end the conflict between he and Stannis.
Omg this book is so addictive. Second Storm of Swords book.
Spoiler (highlight to read):
so. many. key. deaths.
Fucking red wedding 30% of the way into the book, I thought it was going to be the end of the book till I saw how much more there was to go!At this moment I have money on someone like Bran getting the throne in the end. Starting to run out of Male characters that we follow.

I think I found part of what you're referencing. Finished the book this morning. Fuck, I think I only bought it on Friday.Jay wrote:

Haha, now imagine multi-year gaps between new books. I started the series ten years agoPrivateVendetta wrote:

I think its quickly reaching that point.Jay wrote:

Magic has become the deus ex machina. Arya Spoiler (highlight to read):
escapes from the clutches of the Lanister army by having a wizard spontaneously appear out of nowhere. He was just one of the caged boys Yoren was taking to the wall in the first book. Yet suddenly through magic lets her kill three men of her choosing, the third being most of her captives so she can make for her escape not long after. The Wizard departs just as quickly as soon as her problem is solved. Too conveiniant.
Bran the cripple can now use his "third eye" and run and jump as a wolf. All the problems of being a cripple instantly removed. And Jon is likely to get similar powers judging by the start of Clash of Swords where he scouts as Ghost.
Hate to think what Daenarys and Melisandre will be doing as their story progress.
about 3/4 out of the first book, and I must have been getting really into it. I was getting angry when all the shit and King's Landing went down, and the when Jon was locked away in the tower freaked me out. Maybe that had to do with the electrical storm causing blackouts and creepy noises from the wind too, but I enjoy books that I get sucked into.
Those both turn into really cool story lines. I mean it is a fantasy book, what do you expect? Compared to most fantasy series, the magic aspect is almost wholly supplemental rather than the focus. Again, it's fantasy, you're supposed to suspend disbelief and just go with itAussieReaper wrote:

The whole series will drag you in and keep you going. I hated the first half of the new book because it was so fucking slow, but I still finished it in like two weeksAdams_BJ wrote:

Xbone Stormsurgezz
It's Arry
The whole trip with Yoren and the group heading to the wall is FUBAR. Going to be interesting to see how they depict it.
