I want some dental work done but I'd prefer just to be asleep whilst they do it and for a short while after. Can you pay them to do that or not?

I think you have to provide your own roofies in that case

you can be put under for general anaesthetic if you go to a hospital and have a serious problem that needs some hefty work

but normally, no

e: DF you want dental horror? After my wisdom tooth surgery, as in about an hour after, I was sitting on the couch with my laptop when I tilted my head down ever so slightly. Suddenly I noticed a pool of blood on a part of my laptop.
Yeah that happens. When I was shadowing a dentist, I was surprised actually at how much blood there actually is in a simple procedure like a filling. When he was drilling, you just see it spray from around the area. Hoping to shadow an oral surgeon, too, at some point this summer.
I was with an orthopedic surgeon once, the man had to operate on someone's neck. Blood everywhere, even more than when he opened the entire thigh on another patient.

Thigh of a fat lady, quite a stench came from out there. The assistants had to keep it open with two massive claws because her bone was literally in an ocean of fat.

Well at least there's a good chance at some ketamine in your near future

Propofol and ketamine = you will not be aware of the procedure, but your body will be trying to flail about in pain.

-DF if you shadow and oral surgeon you might get to strap patients down and hold their head just right to keep their airways open.

It's kind of a trip.

Yeah jord, nowadays there's this sedation called twilight IV sedation (gay name but whatever), it's what they used for my wisdom tooth surgery. It basically makes you black out and they use novocaine or some other painkiller to block pain. It's safer than general anesthesia and I think they originally made it precisely for people who get very nervous around dentists.

e: It's pretty great tbh. They put the needle in your arm, next thing you know you're waking up. I opened my phone to tweet about my surgery and then saw that I had already tweeted about it

i don't see much problem with local anaesthetic.

you can't feel anything except for the pressure of the dentist's work, and i just lie back and close my eyes and think of a holiday or something.

There's nothing in the world that sends a shiver down my spine like the sound of a dentists drill. Holy fuck do I hate that noise.

My dentist is pretty good, don't feel the injections (which I hate) then I just close my eyes like a pussy and keep my mouth open.

Dentist drills suck. What sucks more is getting a cavity filled when the dentist didn't use quite enough novocaine. That happened to me last time I went to the dentist. It only hurt for a split second but god damn did it hurt!

Because of the abcess they couldn't give me anaesthetics else it'd spread the infection or some bullshit, so she had to drill a hole into my tooth and try and squeeze the pus out, fucking gruesome.

I had a furuncle on my ass once and the doctor wanted to do something to it with a scalpel in order to be able to check if it was caused by a MRSA infection. I think she used the same BS excuse for not using anesthetic. That was probably the most painful experience of my life, appendicitis being a close second.

Didn't you already nuke it with antibiotics?  That's a precursory step to the procedure, in order to prevent that from happening and allowing them to give you local anaesthesia.  I wouldn't worry about it being any more painful than your current state.

This was before I'd had a course of antibiotics though, it was to reduce the swelling because they couldn't see anything on the xray due to the swelling.

After a week of antibiotics my dentist numbed my mouth before root canal, you should be fine.
