No it's not - travelling is something I do for pleasure/enjoyment, changing oil isn't.
I actually find working on a car to be nice sometimes.
I like fixing things myself. If nothing else, it gives me a small sense of accomplishment.

i really hate researchers sometimes

Also, emerging research suggests that if you're sedentary most of the day, it may not matter how hard or often you exercise.
People who spend more time sitting during their leisure time have an increased risk of death, regardless of daily exercise.

AKA "yeah, if you work in an office setting like most Americans, it doesn't matter if you exercise, you're gonna die sooner"

I also love the "increased risk of death part," as if you can decrease your risk of dying some day.

Saves me the hassle of sitting around in a shop waiting for someone else to do it. My time is valuable. It also makes me self sufficient, rather than dependent on others.
If I ever wanted to change oil/change tyres for the sake of time/being self-sufficient, I'm sure I could google it and get it done. It's not like I'm missing out on a valuable skill - it's right there, available to me whenever I want.

Good luck with your google search.

Yup, and you know the quality of work. Contractors around here are shit cause housing costs are so high, so they get away with whatever shit work they want. Doing work myself allows me to have quality stuff, save money, and since I like doing it, a bit of relaxation.

Plus when you take your car in for an oil change and they strip out the plug on the oil pan, you wonder why the fuck you are paying some jack off to fuck up your car.

This happened with an e-mail to an ex one time. Avoided replying to her for months, then finally put together a long ass e-mail, only for it to crash and lose it. Never got around to re-writing it.

Can you change a tire? Can you change your oil? Could you put up a piece of drywall? Dig a hole without becoming instantly tired? These are simplistic jobs that you undoubtedly look down upon but I bet you couldn't perform any of them. If your life path was one that led to riches then you could probably get away with just paying other people to do everything for you. But you're not.

For someone that rails against the specialization that college has become, with their one-dimensional engineers and science people, you sure as shit seem to have turned yourself into such a highly specialized college graduate that your career choices are rather small. Irony.
I don't know how to do any of those things. I don't know how to work a till or turn on the burger-frier at McDonald's either.

But, you know, I could always spend a couple of minutes on Google and find out. It's not that dificult.

john you're so caught up in this emersonian idea of 'self-reliance' that it's hilarious. and that's fine because it's convenient for you and the life you've led, and the life you lead. doesn't mean it fits or appeals to everyone, pal. the truth of the matter is that barely anybody will miss those skills in their lives, and even if they do need them, they'll probably be on a white-collar salary that can just pay for the service. that's the way this world is now. if you think anyone outside of walden ponds is brushing up on how to build some drywall and rig an engine then you're fucking delusional and need to put down your romanticist little books on the subject.

People who aren't rich need to know those skills. My dad told me about when he was talking to someone and he mentioned that we repainted the kitchen/hallway and the guy asked which service we used. He seemed shocked when my dad told him we did it ourselves.

It's got nothing to do with philosophy. If nothing else it's an easily attainable life experience.

true that

applying for permits on my house and I had to explain to them it was me building the basement for the foundation of the house ..... two employees and a supervisor later, they finally figured out to correctly punch it in the computer

the permit cost me $300 more since it was non-licensed individual
