yeah... i have to mention my elation here, because i can't actually be visibly chuffed around friends, or on facebook

because they all fucking hate me for being the guy notorious for parties, binges and debauchery... who still manages to stay afloat

i mean this 100% sincerely... it's actually not so fun seeing your friends slaving away and not getting very good marks. people i know have cried and shit. it's pathetic but depressing. i dunno... coke = brain fuel.

You seem smart enough that you could get away with this stuff, though. Maybe it's just my majority of science classes the past few years, but you seem to know what you're talking about. I only know a handful of literature majors, and they seem to have picked it for no good reason because all I hear is how they don't like to read (). Then again, my university isn't as renowned for liberal arts as it is for science and engineering.

literature over here is mostly just a straight-reputation thing. it's an old and esteemed academic discipline - like classics. no one really studies classics because they're super passionate about the ancient world, or greek or fucking hideous latin. it's just a stamp of merit, a sort of intellectual brand. you do get the book-crazy arty types, though, sure... the thespians and the fanboys/fangirls for author xyz. but the enthusiasm rarely carries over into any academic advantage; it's something you have to work at, just like a science, to do well in. being an avid reader doesn't really cut it.

Your thoughts, insights, and musings on this matter intrigue me

yep. so it's like a question of top10 for english or the top3 w/ truly worldclass prestige. i don't know if i want to really go into academia (i.e. PhD), i mainly just want the master's because i'm not done being a student yet and it's the next pay-bracket.

also the top-ranked places are fucking expensive for postgrad... talking like an extra year (at least) of saving cash to finance it. so it's a toss-up between a free master's or a tedious slog, depending on minor reputation differences.
