There's a lot of wasted space in this interface concept, I think. They're trying to throw too much onto the surface, and it just looks muddled, blobby and ugly as a result. I can't imagine that too many people would develop the patience for all that extravagant touchscreening just to send e-mail, check their stocks or do facebook.

A few icons, a sidebar and an open browser are far more efficient.

Why cant you do that with windows 8? It's way to early to make a judgement call on efficiency. We need more information with regards to customization, performance, and options.

Again, I think they are trying to go with familiarity. .. from pc to tablet to phone. I think in the long run thats probably a good thing for future generations of computer users. However, people hate change, and there will always be resistance. That's mostly because there is a certain amount of learning to be done.

I certainly don't remember that many problems with XP's launch. However, the difference could be that when Vista came out there was a greater, more diverse technology market to accommodate. That makes more logical sense tbh.
Also you have to remember that XP and 2K's drivers are fairly interchangeable like Vista and 7's so there was a head start.

Are you talking about tiles over icons?
I sure hope not because tiles show more information than icons and are more useful as a result.

They went out of their way to make sure everyone realised that the normal windows desktop is still there. I have no doubt that either enterprise/business versions of Windows will have the new interface off by default or able to be disabled. Microsoft knows where their money comes from and are not stupid, contrary to what a lot of people seem to think.

From the average consumer's point of view, the advantage to a Mac over a PC is usability. I think this new interface is a good start in that direction - and one that translates across different devices.

None of this was directed at you Kmar lol.

Seems like a cross between Media Center and Windows Phone.

Considering that Metro started in Media Center and then went to WP, are you really surprised?

Microsoft has also changed heavily since the launch of Windows 7. I'm not going to pre-order Win8, but I'll definitely be watching and waiting with excitement on reviews.

What I'd like to know is why I should bother with Windows 8 over Windows 7.

That's what will be coming in September when the official presentation/demo is going to be given.

I was thinking about buying a laptop this fall, but now I'm thinking about waiting until Win8. Would be pretty cool if all of a sudden everyone was building capacitive screen equipped convertible laptops to take advantage of Win8's touch interface.

lol, man, nobody has been able to answer why would i bother with windows 7 over xp if not for the lack of support by hardware/software developers, and you already ask about windows 8.

The general rule is wait until they release the first service pack for the new OS before you buy it.

I agree actually. There seems to be a mentality "we have to upgrade".

Many business ask the same question and have no need for anything else as well, especially hospitals.

This.  Sad really.  Although, I am part of the Windows 7 Initiative group.  So, it will eventually come to our 60K+ employee corporation.

And since we are going Virtual Desktops, we won't have to deal with massive hardware upgrades.
