xp is slow
xp is faster, uses several times less resources, at least as secure as any post-xp shit, an par on all reasonable functionality one would ever need. i'm not sure what you mean by "folder redirection" but ntfs junction points have been there, iirc, since win2k. and no, i don't care one bit about ui's - i always turn all that shit off and run classic pre-xp style desktop scheme.mikkel wrote:

@CapnNismo: microsoft added absolutely nothing new since XP. the "dinosaur" beats vista and seven in... well... everything actually. UAC can not stand for security, sorry. and, sorry again, but no mega-fetch, uber-fetch or super-duper-fetch can stand for an abstraction layer between file system and user interface and applications they've been advertising when this shit had been called "longhorn". interface alone - and kinda ugly one at that - does not make a new operating system.
i said it before and i still stand by my opinion: if not for the lack of support i'd never leave XP for vista or seven. no reason to, none whatsoever. If you're a systems administrator in a Windows environment, surely the restructured filesystem user space and the associated folder redirection is a significant motivator to upgrade to an NT6-based OS. For a home user, the concept of libraries, the simplified networking, the superior media applications and the fact that you won't be operating on an eleven-year-old UI that shows its age all speak in favour of upgrading.Shahter wrote:
XP is still better that anything released after it, that's what i'm trying to say. anybody claiming otherwise should simply clean microsoft's marketing shit away from their brains and look at what they run on their machines.
Vehemently lambasting NT6 operating systems without really offering any substantial positive argument in favour of XP makes it seem like you're both bitter and afraid of change. It certainly doesn't detract from NT6.
so, as i said, if not the the lack of support for older stuff, there would be no reason whatsoever to pay microsoft for their "new" operating systems.
if you open your mind too much your brain will fall out.
true on on the junction points being there since 2k
Main reason: 64bit support, which XP really sucked at (at least driver support sucked). Really depends upon the business and its needs.

ok, we get it - Russia can and will support 10 year old OS's. . . .Shahter wrote:

i predict i'll still be using windows 7 come 2017. It's a fine piece of OS
8 lacks any kind of usability.

no, you don't. as long as there's no new functionality in "new" OS's, russia won't pay for them13urnzz wrote:

And, outside of the bowels of Intel corp, or a few long-beard *nix kernel developers, Russia is the only place you'll find truly competent ASMx86 programmers.13urnzz wrote:

Everyone else seems to have given up on "bare metal" programming, in favor of lazy shitpile VM environments.
Something to be said for Russian stubbornness.
(Or really long, dark winters)
i have a motorola tablet, and i am impressed with what the development community has done with Android. 5 months after i bought it, i've since installed a couple of ROM's and a few kernels.rdx-fx wrote:

in that same time, i've re-installed XP on my wife's machine (just a refresh) win 7 on my machine (got an SSD, figured i'd go clean) and there's nothing you could do in win 7 that you couldn't do in XP. except -
it's a hell of alot easier to strip the shit out of XP, make it leaner and reduce the footprint.
I agree with you about running XP UI's. I prefer those to having to squint through all the bubbly Aero shit.Shahter wrote:

But Windows 7 is vastly superior for newer computers and gaming, and Vista+ is even required for some games. The 16GB of RAM I'm running certainly trumps the bloody ceiling I've run into with XP.
That said, 2012/13 is going to see a new build for me, using most of the same parts I've bought for the Sep'11 Sandy Bridge. It's going to take quite a bit to convince me to replace 7 Ultimate with 8.
there is one thing - the latest directx. but then again, that's not some inherent limitation of xp, but - again - lack of support for it from microsoft. i'm pretty sure that if not for stuff like that they wouldn't sell much of anything post-xp.13urnzz wrote:

you are right, i meant - even though they change the file structure a bit, that win 7 was evolutionary, not THE revolution winfs and all the other bells and whistles promised before they released vista.Shahter wrote:

there is another thing i like better about win 7. it's driver support after a clean install is much improved. what does irk me though, i have an HP scanner that i can't use in vista/win 7 that runs under XP.
Windows 8 will also not be a 'revolutionary' OS, but from what i've read there will be more file structure changes.
Ballmer is not Gates.13urnzz wrote:

Without Gates, Microsoft has lost the ability to be (successfully) 'revolutionary'.
They'll keep riding the existing properties (Office & Windows) until they miss the "Next Big Thing".
Like IBM circa 1980's.
Or Motorola for the last 30 years.
I would posit that Apple may eat their lunch, but they've lost Jobs.
Oh well, it was a good run.
Back to bland buggy half-assed corporate groupthink designed hardware and software
Sony DVD players and Motorola cell phones for everyone!...

The Steve kind of Jobs, not the Foxconn China kinda Jobs
Windows 7 Media Center is great for HTPC. Using Media Extension from my XBox, using the wireless XBox controller, easy as pie.
unless you're running on old hardware, win7>XP in so many attributes

@Tazz: if you can't organize your workplace without that shit, well, too bad. hire a secretary of something.
this is the way i run it. operating system is not there to fap on - it's a tool, used for certain things. i have figured out my preferences long long ago so i don't need to search for my programs - and pay with a gigabyte, no lees, of memory used just so i can do that.
so no, thanks. when actual new functionality is included with "new" os get back to me.

Shahter, your arguments plainly illustrate you have no idea whatsoever about what you are talking about. Come back when you've got a clue.Shahter wrote:

lol lotus notes. I have that as one of the questions that I ask when going on future interviews. If they use lotus notes, I stand up and leave.
