I've got some unbacked up data (not mine, obviously - I'm not that much of a muppet, it belongs to a girlfriend of mine) on a hard drive with corrupted firmware. It's clicking a bit too - but I suspect that's firmware related rather than being the typical skipping to remapped bad sectors.

SATA interfaced recovery methods appear to be a no go - so it looks like I need to interface the firmware directly via a COM to jumper connection and recover the firmware with the Seagate tool (free since it's a Barracuda VII series drive ).

I don't suppose anyone has any tips on obtaining a cable like this:

It is - but I'd have to order parts and stuff....

It's so much hassle (and it's been a long time since I've put anything like that together - I'm terribly out of practice).

would it be cheaper than a data recovery center? i think our company paid $1200 to recover a 250gb laptop HDD . . .

A lot cheaper - but not such a high success rate. Data recovery centres have clean rooms and very fancy expensive machines that can interact directly with the drive servos - if that's the level of service you require you have to pay them.

However - more than half of all hard drive failures are firmware related and nothing to do with the drive itself. These can be fixed at home, but it's really awkward most of the time.

A friend of mine used to use one of these kits: http://www.salvationdata.com/data-recov … doctor.htm

That worked really well - but he's gone to Australia and so I can't use it now.

I'm just trying to avoid spending the $50 on a pre-made cable when I might be able to obtain one on the cheap somewhere else or make one - if I can be bothered.

I suppose it all comes down to how much I want to score brownie points with the drives owner...

yeah, points and the value of the data. to the company, the data was worth more than the laptop it came from.

i remember buying similar HDD's from ebay, and swapping the board. would that work, or am i missing the point?

It can work - but they need to be very similar and it doesn't work at all for many modern drives - like the one I'm using

What sort of data is it? Just personal photos/emails etc? Unless its something really important it sounds like a lot more money and effort than it's worth.

we made one just like that at work to recover data from seagate drives. it's actually useful for a lot of other stuff - a colleague re-flashed his dvd-player with it. it's basically a 12v-5v converter, it adjusts the signal from your COM port for reception by devices which use 5v interface.
you can build it yourself, it's very easy. or, if you really need it done, like, right now, i'm sure there are people around your parts who'd do that for you, you'd have to pay for their services of course.
if you open your mind too much your brain will fall out.
