The reinstallation went smoothly and the computer is working fine now, confirming that the virus did majorly ruin Windows. It's a shame Microsoft removed the ability to do an easy repair installation with Vista, since that would have saved me the hassle of reinstalling the programs I had. Thanks to everyone for the help; I really appreciate it.

that's why when you finished your installation, customized it according to your needs and tastes, and cleaned everything up, you make a complete backup of everything minus your data (which should be kept separated from the system and program files anyway) in a file on a separate partition of your hard drive. easily recoverable in 10 minutes any time you want. try acronis.
