How were the 80's? Were they as fun as old movies suggest? Were people really optimistic about the future? Would you look to experience them again or would you rather you never have to think about them? Same thing with the 90's.

I started thinking about it after I read a review of the South Park movie back from 99.

wrote:

What is it saying? That movies have gone too far, or that protests against movies have gone too far? It is a sign of our times that I cannot tell. Perhaps it's simply anarchistic, and feels that if it throws enough shocking material at the wall, some of it will stick. A lot of the movie offended me. Some of it amazed me. It is too long and runs out of steam, but it serves as a signpost for our troubled times. Just for the information it contains about the way we live now, thoughtful and concerned people should see it. After all, everyone else will.
I know the movie came out in 99, on the tail end of thing, but n retrospect '99 seemed a hell of a lot better than '11 in so many ways.

So yeah how were the 80's and 90's?

I was a kid during the 80's. Most people tend to look back at their younger years and say, gee that was fun. 'Fun' really has to do more with ones personal experience during any given decade. Trends are constantly coming and going. You'll look back at yours one day and laugh too.

80's make me think of Cavaricci's, Michael Jackson, and big hair.
90's make me think of the show Friends, the Hubble Tele, Clinton, and Seinfeld.

Personally I think the 70's were where it was at. Drugs and sex.

70's were the ass-end of drugs and sex, though... 60's seem to be more fun, before the dream died, as it were. 70's seemed more self-indulgent and destructive-- all sorts of bad trips and going far over the edge. this is just coming from expressions in art and literature, of course - i have no personal experience . a lot of people romanticize the 50's because of the trendy beatniks but i think it stinks, beneath the poetic veneer of kerouac's travels. segregation, civil rights, war, discrimination, and all the wrong sorts of drug use... alcoholics, speedfreaks, dopefiends...

I was a kid in the 80s and an adolescent through the 90s (born '81). 80s is just childhood stuff to me, like watching tv in the mornings and listening to my parent's music like Kate Bush and Simply Red. 90s to me was all about growing up and listening to grunge, Red Hot Chili Peppers, U2 and commercial trance music like Jam n Spoon and Culture Beat It was also when I got into bands like Tool and Primus (in the late 90s), when I first got drunk and stoned and got friendly with some girls.

I think I have a rose-tinted view of the 90s cos I was a little kid. What did I have to worry about? My family was strong so there weren't bad things going on at home, I went to a good school so I wasn't bullied, and my responsibilities were a bit of homework here and there and otherwise just growing up. I do think children's TV shows from the 90s are far better than the present day ones though.

was a kid in the 80's so i dunno.  i only seem to remember the challenger, micheal jackson, and doing that weird cuff thing with your pants.

90's the world started going to shit as it seemed to a young lad.  LA riots, gulf war, bosnia, seemed like there was a terrorist attack all the time.  oh and by the time you made it thru your education 9/11 happened so thats a good time to start your career.

I remember the cartoons. Voltron and GI Joe and Transformers etc. Then there were the afternoon cartoons like Talespin, Duck Tales, Darkwing Duck, Gummy Bears etc. Good times.

Oh, and slap bracelets, and bad hair bands. I believe I wore a 'tail' in the third grade because it was cool. Mullets were made cool by Don Johnson. Nintendo came out. Oh, and no shit, kids actually were allowed outside to play because parents weren't yet inundated with 24 hour news cycles screaming about some kid in Idaho getting kidnapped.

The 90s were Cobain and flannel followed by nu metal and jnco's. Barney and Friends and CGI replaced the cartoons of my youth. The 90s were kind of awkward actually. It was kind of a transition phase between the 80's and 00's.

I was kid in the 80's also. Whatever I like about the 80s now, I hated it about then (like the pop music).

I remember playing Atari 2600, Coleco Vision, and writing (transcribing form a book) basic programs on my Atari 400.

People romanticise the past and pick a few freak events and judge a whole period based on that.
Its not as if everyone in the sixties was stoned off their heads, or loaded up with LSD 24 hours a day any more than they are now.

No doubt in 20 years kids will think we spent our days fighting hand-to-hand with muslims in every suburb.

Weirdly, ripping holes in your jeans has come back.

I once got suspended from summer camp because a girl told me to grab her boobs and she then had hand prints on her hypercolor shirt. Totally worth it

I thought the late 70s-80s were more interesting than the preceding decades in terms of musical experimentation.
Widespread use of synthesizers changed a lot.

well yeah, that's a given... even historians have to generalize to an extent. how exactly can you represent an entire decade?

I asked my youngest brother if he had put the holes in his jeans himself (you know, the old fashioned way), but they took the guesswork out of what's cool for him.
