70's were the ass-end of drugs and sex, though... 60's seem to be more fun, before the dream died, as it were. 70's seemed more self-indulgent and destructive-- all sorts of bad trips and going far over the edge. this is just coming from expressions in art and literature, of course - i have no personal experience . a lot of people romanticize the 50's because of the trendy beatniks but i think it stinks, beneath the poetic veneer of kerouac's travels. segregation, civil rights, war, discrimination, and all the wrong sorts of drug use... alcoholics, speedfreaks, dopefiends...
People romanticise the past and pick a few freak events and judge a whole period based on that.
Its not as if everyone in the sixties was stoned off their heads, or loaded up with LSD 24 hours a day any more than they are now.

No doubt in 20 years kids will think we spent our days fighting hand-to-hand with muslims in every suburb.
In the case of Lowing's grandkids, that will be accurate.

I mostly wrote this to see if that set off his RSS feed for his name.

Don't forget about AIDS...

AIDS was first recognized by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention in 1981 and its cause, HIV, identified in the early 1980s.
But, I suppose you could really pin that one on the 70s.

Things were rather hazy and dreamish during the 80s. From what I remember anyway.

good saturday morning cartoons, the soviets were a joke and china was still a poor shithole,  Ghostbusters,  NES was fucking mindblowing, Apple macintosh computers, no cell phones, no internet(yes, I know they both existed), CDs were fucking magical and you gladly paid $180 for a Sony cassette walkman.  Nickelodeon and MTV were the greatest TV channels ever invented.  people still bought and collected porn magazines.  And nobody gave a shit about global warming.  Yes, the 80's were magical.  anyone born after 87 really missed out.

I remember saving up for ages to pay $100 for a brand new copy of Zelda II on the NES.

These days, games like BF3 are cheaper, yet inflation has driven the dollar up so much more.

It be like paying $300 for a new game these days

Loser, I had die-cast stuff, including the Starship Enterprise which fired real phaser bullets (orange plastic discs) which my mum confiscated.
Also Tonka, meccano artillery set (see above ref phaser bullets) and lego.
Was too poor for Star Wars figures or Atari consoles.

I was only around for the last three years of the 80s, can't remember much. There was a bit of a lag in terms of when NZ experienced what would be the eighties so I would argue that a lot of it stuck around. Maybe that was just me though since all of my clothes and toys were hand-me-downs so through my early 90s I at least looked like a product of the eighties.
