I've had this laptop for 6 months now and up until this point it has been fine. However, for the last few weeks it has started taking ages to load up and
now suffers from random crashes - The most popular being Windows crashing out on me.

Any advice?

microsoft security essentials (get rid of Norton/etc/similar)
spybot s&d
malwarebytes
HijackThis
Uninstall unnecessary programs
windows malicous software removal tool
defraggler
windows update
vacuum dust from air intakes/exits

google each one of those: download/run/use/follow guide

excellent post. 
I also recommend combofix.
