I am looking to consolidate all of my digital media onto one drive,
I need at least 2TB that I can load and store for as long as possible without accessing it.

never had a drive larger than 750GB before so I need some advice on which of the large capacity ones last the longest etc

thanks for any info

All of today's hard drive brands have exactly the same failure rate. If you want reliability, use RAID 1.

Are you going to use a SSD?

I would never store all my "stuff" on just one drive, that's hazardous ...

I prefer to use a regular jard drive as opposed to the SSD or doing a raid config

I plan on keeping all my other drives so I have multiple copies of the "stuff"
I just need a single large capacity drive to keep it all together for easy travel and backup etc

is there a certain brand/size HDD that you guys would recommend for this purpose ?

thanks for all the replies

mirroring raid you can pull one drive out and use it independently

I like the WD caviar black drives, size per your requirements.

thanks man,
i am looking for low cost, as are most college students
i like the small western digital drives for portability(just a usb drive is needed)
my 2 tb lacie looks like it will withstand a fire but it's prolly just a show-case.. that's very heavy and stylish

i never install the software they come with. is that bad? i just 'plug and play' hehehehehehe

Sure ... and the older the drive the better, HDDs tends to age like wine

I had two external lacies die on me in less than 6 months.

ive had 2 last me over 3 years so far with plenty of abuse.  hard drives are pure luck, other than specific batches theres really no difference from one brand to another.

its not like lacie makes the drives anyway, i believe mine are samsung drives inside

Good to know I'll stay away from Samsung now as well..lol
Consumer experience it always going to be the foremost determining factor of purchases. Right or wrong. The simple fact is that if I bought a third one and it failed relatively quickly I'd have to slit my wrist.

Did you guys ever see that massive study about HD's a couple years ago with Google?

no, save me some time searching by posting a link?

on topic: i was using seagate drives almost exclusively at home for many years now. in the past it definitely was "seagate and everything else" on the market of hdd's, but, admittedly, seagate is getting worse by the year now. at work we use all kinds if drives, and i'd surely advise against samsung. mixed results with wd and hitachi.

so, to conclude: i'd still prefer seagate, tbh, even though it's not as rock solid as it used to be in the past.

hard drive fanboyism is kinda silly.  i have 3 separate samsung drives in my room, 5 WDs and a seagate or two.  the only ones that have failed on me are 2 WD ones and one samsung laptop drive but that would never make me want to switch from using either company.

it's not "fanboyism", really. my conclusions come from experience working with the number of drives that won't probably fit in your room at all.
