why the fuck is that called a hack.
...shits me.
I want to take a moment to disguss the new google UI.
I am, absolutely, in love. This week has been amazing for me, as all the services i frequent, have been updated to a style, that is absolutely amazing and pure to the eye (at least in my opinion)

What's a better search engine?

Yes.
I'm talking about actually going to google.com. Seems like an unnecessary step when you can search right from the address bar.13rin wrote:

someone's not on g+!
sidenote: i hope google makes it so you can easily snap a pic or make a video with your webcam and put it on there. facebook is pretty quick, simple, and convenient in that regard.

Yep... just waiting. Ho humm
*ahem* kerrymarion1A lot of people want to get in on the beta test of Google+, Google's new social-networking service. If you're one of the folks in the in-crowd, there's something you can do to get your friends on board right now.
And it's not as obvious as clicking an "invite friends" button to invite them directly. Google opened up that possibility last night but then shut it down after a fleeting moment because of what Google's Vic Gundotra called "insane demand."
Instead, you have to use a built-in e-mail option for Google+ that happens to have a viral marketing component. Here are the steps.
First, figure out who you'll send invitations to. If they're already in your Gmail address book or another Google service, you're a step ahead. If not, there's some cutting and pasting in your future.
For friends whose e-mails are already in your Gmail address book or otherwise discoverable in Google+'s Circles section, add them to a special circle you created for G+ invitees. If they're not in your contacts, just hold onto their addresses for now.
Next, start a new Google+ message, the equivalent of a Facebook update message or a Twitter tweet. In it, type an invitation message with an expectations-lowering caution. Here's what I've been saying: "This message serves as an invite to Google+. Google throttles the signup rate, though, so it may not work at first. If not, try again later."

I must've gotten lucky. Maybe you will too
I got lucky with early invites to Gvoice and Wave.. I guess my luck has ran out.

I'm on it... and there was a way to invite people (I've invited about 10-15) using circles... but they've disabled that now.
To be quite honest, it has nothing that Facebook doesn't have, and it doesn't have the userbase. Right now it's just like Wave... No users. That's the problem with Google and these testing releases, they don't give it to enough people to try out so it never kicks off because nobody checks it anymore as there is nothing of interest on it.
I like the use of HTML5 and CSS3 around the site and how everything loads a hell of a lot snappier than Facebook and looks better... but it has nothing over Facebook. Circles really are smart and cool, but at the end of the day nobody will use them because it's too much of a hassle to do so. People are lazy, and Google is trying out ways that just add an extra layer of effort for them.
Hangout is cool, but not enough people have webcams and a decent internet connection to do anything productive with them. That was their "piece de resistance" and frankly it won't work. It's too much too soon. Especially when about 70% of the UK is still under 1mbit lines.
Google can jazz it up as much as they like, and play on Hangout and Circles constantly because they think it's awesome... But at the end of the day it just won't work. I predicted it with Wave, as I predict it with Google+. Too little too late.
On a side note - Facebook will implode one day, and something bigger and better will appear, but Google+ doesn't add anything over Facebook except that it works a bit faster and isn't fuckloaded with Javascript. But then you put that into context and you see that there's still over 14% of the market share that uses outdated browsers, so no Google+ for them.
Google wants to integrate absolutely everything you do in one system, and people are just not going to go for that. A lot of people like to compartmentalise, and Google is destroying that barrier between Search/Personal/Business and it will put off many people. Facebook has tried to do the same, but kept it minimal and optional, whereas Google will not.
I give it 1 month more hype.

I don't think Google+ needs to be #1 to be successful. So long as you can get enough of your friends in it then it's going to be useful. In a way it's more intimate that way. You don't need to have Joes body shop as well as every other business in town setup with an account for it to work (fb). Twitter was limited to a relatively small group of techies before it finally gained popularity.
I'll wait till it's fully live with all of its features before leveling the gavel on this one. I do agree that the way they rolled it out is dumb though. You get people in early who can't add their friends and they get impatient. Finally their friends get in but the early users have already have already decided it's not useful^ .. so the interaction never reaches full scale.

Not the same thing though, as Twitter was the first of its kind. Totally different ball park when you have no competitor and it's an actual brand new idea.Kmar wrote:

I'm not saying that it is. The point was that people still subscribe and use services even if it's not the most popular one.. like the all mighty facebook, which was not the first of it's kind neither. That doesn't necessarily mean it is a failure.Zimmer wrote:

Why do Google still have the "I'm feeling lucky" button? Does anyone really use that?
