I recommend you do not get computer speakers.
1. They are expensive
2. The power output and quality are usually meh for price.

Go to your local pawn shop, grab a good pair of speakers, and an audio receiver, go over to walmart and grab some speaker wire and a rca to male 3.5mm to connect audio receiver to computer and voila you have some badass computer speakers.

This works even better if you know where to get home speakers for cheap or free (like me). I have like 8 speakers in my room.

Yeah, well I've completely blown my budget on a high end sound card and $150 headphones instead

But I was never really planning on actual marketed computer speakers, the question was more about suggestions for speakers to hook up to my computer, badly worded on my part

guys please do not recommend sets of speakers it encourages leaving weaker speakers out and does not help create a society of caring and uplifting
all speakers were created equal

thank you

Just some speakers are more equal than others.

sorry jaekus the principle laws of mathematics state that you cannot have things that are more equal
i expect you to read up on mathematics and refrain from posting until then as it makes mathematically inclined posters uncomfortable

thank you

So I bought those headphones

Now just trying to track down an Asus Xonar Essence STX for the best price. My local is out of stock
You could always run HDMI out to an AV receiver and plug your headphones into that, unless there's a particular reason you want to mess with sound cards (dinking with op-amps, software, etc).

e: nm, you got the card

Yeah should be here tomorrow with the express postage (was same as regular, go figure) and confirmed with tracking number via email this afternoon.

I don't own any high end audio gear, which I grew up with ($1,000 Yamaha amp and matching speakers worth $1,200 each - and that was in the price my dad paid for them in ~1980) and have suddenly realised I sorely miss. Very excited

Now I just need a good source of .flac files or I'm going to have a to rip a shitload of CDs...

Just listening to Third Eye by Tool.

Even through my pretty average $40 gaming headset, there's a noticeable improvement. Highs are more crystal, mids are punchier and less wooden, lows are there.

Very impressed! I cannot wait for my Audio Technica ATH-AD700s to arrive now, gah!!

Ok, so I've come kind of full circle as far as this thread goes.

I need some recommendations.

I want something with a relatively flat eq response, something compact (I have a small desk and not a lot of space) and not too expensive. Oh, and it must sound good.

Tell me if I'm asking for too much. There surely has to be something out there that won't cost me an arm and a leg.

I've had a listen to these (http://store.antec.com/P/rockus-3d-spea … 000-6.aspx) and was fairly impressed. Seen them for under $150USD.

Looks the ticket... but they don't appear to be available in Australia

Corsair SP2200's were also nice.

e: To be honest, the "high-end" (er, not the $300/$1000 ones) logitechs should sound fantastic compared to your generic R20's. e2: easier to find, too.

Really? I'm not after some high fidelity audio gear here because I know what sort of budget I would be looking at  (ie. $1,000+).

If that's the case I might invest in a setup as an interim for the real deal down the track.

If you could nail down your remaining budget, it could broaden your options. AV receiver / regular old speakers is a great option.

I'd say around $200, maybe a touch over if they are awesome.

I just remembered I have an old sony micro stereo system at my mum's place. Bought it 10 or so years ago, cost me over $500. The CD player is basically fucked but the speakers are fine and as I recall they sounded awesome. Now I just need a power amp...

Without going into specifics,

M-Audio Studiophile AV 40 (sold in pairs for $150)

A good AV receiver would let you spread out later into 5.1 or up in case you decide to adopt some surround sound gaming and/or plug in a console. A cheaper option would be to throw in a simple stereo receiver. But since you already have the sound card and are trying for $200, I'd stick with the M-Audio speakers and see what you like from there.

e: Well, if you can use those speakers and are happy with them, get yourself a stereo receiver (if your kit doesn't already have one). Should cost less than studio monitors.

After reading some reviews, the negatives with the second option will not affect me at all. I simply need it for audio in > amp > speakers, and that's one of it's best points. Couple it with the speakers I just got an online quote for freight of around $45 and I think I *might* have come up with a solution. Wouldn't have got there without your suggestion of stereo receiver
