I remember these speakers sounded amazing for what they are. Bookshelf speakers with a good freq range response and just loved them. Figure they're doing nothing anyway...

And still running a Sound Blaster 16 in my dos comp.

My home theater is a mishmash of speakers from several eras. Looks pretty chaotic, but it works.

Ok, so after much internet hunting, looking on Google and random forums, I think I've found a winner - Audioengine 2

Thoughts?

Ok, so after a few hours of listening to music on the Audioengine 2s I can firmly give them a big two thumbs up. These little beasts have some decent grunt and have amazing sound reproduction for their size; the reviews are all spot on, the hype is true - I'm seriously impressed. One minor criticism is the sub 100hz freqs are a little thin, but that is to be expected from any speaker enclosure that measures 4"x6"x5.5". That said, the bass is still punchy and tight. Seriously considering a sub to properly compliment these little darlings just to really fill out the ultra low end.

I would have personally saved up a bit and actually invested in a decent system.

Something with a Cambridge Audio DACMagic and a Marantz Amp to drive it. So much more worthwhile.

What's wrong with enjoying the music the way it should be listened?

i don't really think a dac magic will do much for desktop computing... they were the 'must have!' pointless gimmick of the year

Well I'm talking about listening to music, not desktop computing. The DACMagic for Hifi listening out of your computer is a huge bit better than what a sound card can provide. It's not really that expensive. I've had a sound card, and the difference is noticeable; especially when playing high quality music.

Lol $1k on speakers is nothing. Just because you've never experienced it doesn't mean that it won't sound better. The difference between a $200 system and a $1k system is incredibly big.

"recommend me some good computer speakers". i wouldn't tell someone looking for a step-up from ordinary logitech speakers to get a £300 DAC

it is not a little better (at least comparing low-end to mid-range...) it is a LOT better. whether or not that's worth it is still up to you, though.

Lol. A "little" better. Get your ears checked please. I'm not interested in changing your mind, but your idea of the change in quality is just downright wrong.

I don't have the space nor the money. Got a large tax return back but the bulk of that has been converted into USD for my trip to the US next week, so I just waned small desktop speakers. These are absolutely perfect for both budget and application. They actually sound gorgeous.

Indeed. To use an analogy, going from my Logitech R20s to these Audioengine A2s is like going from a cheap 50cc scooter to a Honda Fireblade 250cc. Better in every single possible way, from looks to handling to performance to pure enjoyment.

I have a 2000 dollar system, to be honest I can't tell the difference between that and my dad's 700 system at home. Mine are a little more detailed, but almost unnoticeably. i don't consider myself an audiophile, but rather an audio amateur. I know the gear, and although I can vouch for the wisdom of a more expensive system, I will also say that for most it is not useful or necessary.
I like pie.
