Pretty much the same build I did a week ago, i5-2500, asus p8p67, corsair vengeance (8gb)

Looks good

Would you consider getting the 2500k? Someone I work with got one the other day, with stock fan he easily got it up to 4.8ghz, but of course the temps were steadily climbing and he put it back to around 3.6, no problems at all.

i'm ok at rebuilds and upgrades, but have always stayed away from overclocking as i don't know any techs if i get myself into a jam. i know my limits.

I really dont get it... you guys know how easy it is? CPU's and MB's are born for it!

forget about it, Intel's RAID is working great! No problem at all to set up.

You can still overclock if you wish to without getting the k version.

Pretty sure your motherboard can handle any kind of RAID you'd be wanting to do. It's only when you start going into more complex setups involving lots of HDD's that you need a standalone RAID controller.

I've never overclocked anything but even this was far too easy.

Enter the bios, change the value from stock to whatever (it's in multiples of 100).

So for 3.6, make the value 36.

Don't even need to touch voltages etc.

not really... the k denotes that the cpus have an unlocked multiplier.
for a fatty you're a serious intellectual lightweight.

locked multiplier doesn't affect the FSB(or whatever it's called now)

I'd heard the k version are meant for overclocking whilst the stock 2500 are not.

Is that just marketting hype?

Yes, to overclock you just increase the frequency say it's 400MHz and you'll have a multiplier say 9 so it's running at 3.6GHz, you'll increase the frequency by little increments say 5MHz at a time and if it's stable at that voltage you can try again, if it blue screens you'll have to increase the voltage (which can be dangerous to the cpu if you raise it too high)

All the unlocked multiplier allows you to do is overclock that bit more.

Hmmm. When this person was showing me his overclock he just went into the BIOS and changed a value. Didn't touch volatges or anything. Verfied the overclock using a third party program.

Yes, but the more you increase the frequency the higher the voltage the cpu needs, for example you bump it up to 4.5GHz and it crashes, you'll need to up the voltage to accommodate the extra frequency it's running at.

If it runs fine through stress tests etc then you won't need to change the voltages

There is NO overclocking with with the non-k version as intel changed how their clocks work.

holy macaroni, people, stop talking about stuff you don't know shit about. the k version only gets the unlocked multiplier. nothing else. the only thing an unlocked multiplier might allow you to do is continue overclocking your CPU past your RAM capabilities. that is, when you cannot raise FSB anymore, because you RAM won't work with that, you might still be able to get the effective CPU clocking higher using the multiplier. all this shit would only make sence for the most hardcore overclockers out there. ordinary people who simply look to build themselves a system to run stuff on shouldn't trouble themselves with this crap - if ever you decide to overclock your "normal" cpu, you'll still be able to, especially with the kind of memory listed in the OP. you won't be able to break any records, sure, but ask yourself - do you really want to? no? then don't bother with a cpu designed specifically for that.
if you open your mind too much your brain will fall out.
