I'd rather have a gun to handle it myself or at least have criminals know there's a good chance I might have one in order to deter it, than have an overboard number of power-tripping assholes harassing me all the time for no reason.  Most of America kind of likes it better in their own hands too

Actually, they already have your phone number on file when they do the plate check, at least here they do, i dont know, maybe he asked stupid question just to try and make you panic in case you had something to hide? I dont see the real issue about asking a number they can get easily anyway.

I don't know why he would do that after all the other cops pulled off already.  It seemed like a new tactic to everybody else in the car too, and quite a few of them are pull-over veterans I think

And ever since I first got pulled over, I have made a point of not carrying a single thing onboard that can get me in trouble when this shit happens.

Just lock it in the glove compartment. They can't check without a warrant. Jay Z taught me that.

Some advice and other stuff ...

(1)  Always, always, always be polite and cooperative with police.  That is, if your goal is to not have hassles.
(2)  If you put up an attitude or if you are uncooperative, many police will find something to detain you or some way to charge you.
(3)  Police cannot search your car without probable cause (they saw you put a gun in it) OR your permission.  If you have nothing to hide, then let them search it.  If you refuse to allow them to search your car, see #2.
(4)  Your phone number, like your address, is part of citations they write - it is not a big deal to give it out. Of course, you don't have to provide it (you don't have to provide anything and you can actually tell the policeman that you are exercising your right to not talk), but see #2.
