Laptop Shopping

Hey guys, I'm going to be shopping for a new laptop for college/uni, and I live under a rock so I don't know what's good and what isn't anymore

As far as internal components, what should I be looking for to get good performance (ie. I want it to boot up fast, run programs without any delay, etc.)

My parents laptop is slow as hell, and it's only a few years old. It has Vista, and I know all these new laptops will have either Vista or 7, which I guess I'll have to put up with even though I prefer XP.

I know I want at least 4 gigs of RAM and a 500GB+ hard drive, but I have no idea what processors are good these days, same with video cards.

Yea, I really wanted a Macbook, but they are so pricey, the dinky little 11" ones are $900. I was looking more around $400-$600ish.

netbook? that's what everyone at my school had. they run internet and word processing with ease and can fit into any backpack. just don't expect to game on it.

buy an external HD if you need space

No I don't want a netbook.

I just want to know a few good processors and video cards. I used to be up to date with this stuff, but know I see like Intel i5 38345932 shambalala and I have no idea if it good or not.

i mean are you gonna be trying to game on it? not really that realistic for 400-600. if youre just using it for school stuff, then the gpu/cpu doesnt really matter much. just find one you like in your price range

I bought a dell studio 17 15 back in 2009. Costed me 600 euros, got a decent processor on it, 2.1 ghz dual core + a hd4570 out the top of my head. Battery is extremely good value for the money to be fair, if I just let it idle it will live for 6 hours without recharging. Obviously you wouldn't switch on a laptop to let it idle but you get my drift.

Pretty satisfied with my purchase.
