Need a new phone

I'll start by saying I know nothing about phones, so expect lots of questions from me.

I want a smartphone (no 'superphones').

I want a touchscreen.

I don't want a Blackberry.

It must accept SIM cards.

I like Android from what I've seen of it.

I like the look and feel of the iphone 4.

My budget is $500 (will likely just buy off Ebay).

Any suggestions? What phones are you guys currently using? Care to share your experiences?

I've got an iPhone 4 with Rogers. I think the cheapest data plan now is $60/month (200 minutes, 1GB of data, free evenings and weekends). Tell them you're a student and they'll give you unlimited text messaging, unlimited facebook/twitter/myspace and unlimited calling/texting to 10 (Canadian) numbers of your choice. Also if you plan on buying a SIM card, make sure it's one meant for an iPhone (they're smaller than regular ones).

I love it. The Google maps and OC Transpo apps especially (saved my ass from missing a job interview and prevented me from getting lost downtown )

I plan on going pay as you go, seeing as I use my phone mostly for texting. I can pay 20$ a month for 2,500 texts and 30min of calling. I can add data (which I don't plan on using) from there.

Can I access the app store from wifi?

iPhone 3GS.
Want a 4, but can't justify pushing out the cash for it, my 3gs works fine and will be getting the new OS update anyways.
If you don't want a Blackberry, its pretty much iPhone or some Android, which I have no experience with.

What's the difference between a superphone and smartphone and awesomephone? Its just marketing. Its the most powerful phone, great battery life, a lot more that I don't want to type on my phone. If you're going to pay a few hundred dollars for your phone you should get the best you can. Its more powerful than the iphone 4 and likely similar price on ebay

around 600$ on Ebay. Little out of my league. Looks neat, though. Not sure what I need a dual core processor in my phone for...but I like the idea.

I'd say go with whatever last gen android phone you like. IMO dual core and such is overkill. Just get a nice single core @ 800MHz-1GHz.

I'm considering getting a galaxy s2 now that every phone contract is about to go to shit here in the netherlands. after august you won't be able to get unlimited data plans anymore, they'll all be extremely limited and expensive.

Was planning on waiting on the iphone 5 to see how that turned out first

They're essentially killing the smartphone market here imo. I get where they're coming from. But those phones are useless without a constant internet connection.
