After spending all that time on Rosetta Stone (granted, there was a significant delay between stopping RS and traveling), I was completely lost linguistically in China except for a few phrases that a $10 phrase book jogged my memory on. RS helped with pronunciation on those.

If you want to really learn a language, use your .mil email address, and get a full copy of the DLI-FLC 18 month intensive language course.

Language experts put mandarin along with Japanese and Arabic into the very hard category for native speakers of English to learn. You need an insane amount of class time to speak those properly.

Anyway thanks everyone.

thats because mandarin is ass backwards

what decent language would require you to know 10000 words just to have an everyday conversation

It's because Mandarin is written with pictographs instead of phonetic letters. Each symbol contains and idea-- more than a word.

i took the language for around 8 years thank you

edit: it still sucks

Any segmental writing system.

How so? Phonetic writing systems are not necessarily better or more expressive than pictographic or hieroglyphic ones. They're just confusing to non-native learners.

i need to know 26 letters to comprise any word (past, present, or a future word) in english, whereas if i know chinese pinyin that doesn't help me one bit because each word is a separate character that isn't related to pinyin in any way, shape, or form

Because they just make more sense. Why do you think asians use our numbering system? It's easier and leads to less confusion. Same premise.

Our Indian number system.

A universal system of writing mathematics is a result of global commerce. If the Oriental peoples had took over the world maybe we would use a different number system, but probably not.

Sorry but rosetta stone absolutely sucks. It advertises itself as natural learning, but starring at pictures and playing see and say is not natural. Audiobooks are by far better tools in my opinion.

Of course having bi-lingual parents also helps..lol

For what language kmar? I know you're French, you have lived in Germany, and at one point spent some time in Venezuela. So that narrows it done a bit.
