As my desktop is too far from my router I send internet through my laptop and share the internet. This was going well until we upgraded our internet to a different (cheaper) company. We got new everything (modem, router, etc.) and I got everything up and running there to the point where I can get internet on my laptop (wireless obv) but when I attempt to share it with my desktop I hit a wall and get the error:

"'Local area connection' doesn't have a valid IP configuration"

Here's my ipconfig via the command prompt (and subsequent release/renew commands)

Windows IP Configuration

An error occurred while renewing interface Local Area Connection : unable to con
tact your DHCP server. Request has timed out.
Keep in mind this is the DESKTOP's ipconfig. I figure the laptops doesn't matter because it gets internet just fine?

Desktop is Win7 64bit
Laptop is Win7 32

I have:
  • Reset/power cycled the modem more times than I care to remember
  • Reset/power cycled the router
  • Gave my desktop a static IP
  • Gave my laptop AND desktop a static DNS server (google's public - 8.8.8.8, 8.8.4.4)
  • Turned off Apple's Bonjour Service on both computers
  • Manually gave my desktops ethernet adapter a MAC address
  • Turned off all firewall and antiviruses

For a split second my desktop was connected but I can't figure out why it stopped or how to recreate what I did.

The issue that gets me most is this worked just fine before but through a different modem/router/ISP. Does that make a difference?

HALP! plox. I realize it's nobody's job here to help but I'm ALMOST literally pulling my damn hair out with this.

I've been Googling and attempting to fix this for about 12 hours now and I really don't wanna buy an enormous cable to stretch all the way to my router OR a wireless card. Plus I wanna see what my ping is on BF2 if I now have a 20 meg connection and I had a 1.5 before...

Turn off IPv6.

will do!

more info though:

When setting up the new internet I MUST clone my laptop's MAC address. Will that have anything to do with it? I tried changing a few characters but it won't allow internet. The MAC address of the router and my laptop must be the same.

Can I get some random laptops MAC address to clone? Or bring me desktop to set that one up first?

no dice

"'Local area connection' doesn't have a valid IP configuration"

edit: during my research i found the IPv4 having a "169.254.x.x" might be an issue but I couldnt figure out what. Something with the DNS server?

Son, we don't have no Cable In-ner-nets down har.

I see that shit in routers all the time but fucked if I know what it's for. From what I understand, your router will masquerade as your PC, and then forward (NAT) to everyone, because your ISPs get narky if you have more than one computer in 2011 or something.

The 169. IP is your computer giving up on waiting for a DHCP server (your router) to assign it an IP.

Perhaps something to do with your router, but it still sounds like your laptop won't pass through.

Do you have any other WiFi devices?

Are you bridging network adapters or using Internet Connection Sharing?

ICS

and like i said it worked fine before with the other internet but this is a different ISP/modem/router

If you set a static IP can you ping the laptop/desktop?

What settings are in the laptop's LAN?

I'd also try using network bridge, for the sake of trying. Turn off ICS, highlight both adapters in Network Connections and right-click, Bridge Networks.

No. No reply. I can, however, reach both computers through the other to access/copy files.

What settings are in the laptop's LAN?
Which settings? The IPconfig?

Well they bridged and now I have a 'Network Bridge. MAC Bridge Miniport' but I don't know what to do with that. Tried to connect from the desktop but got the same "Local area connection' doesn't have a valid IP configuration" I see over and over.

Thanks for all the help. I appreciate the shit out of it.

BLEH workaround.

Okay so I decided to haul my desktop up to the router and plug it in directly. Worked. Great.

Went into the router and used the DESKTOP's MAC address as the clone. Still working. Awesome.

Unplugged everything, made sure the laptop was still getting wireless, set the ICS back and bingo, everything is working as it should.

Hauled everything back downstairs and I'm now typing this on my desktop with internet fed from my laptop.

It appears you can't use the same computer who's internet you're sharing as the routers MAC clone. You CAN, however, use the computer who will be stealing the internet.
Anyway, this can be closed if the Mods like or left open if anybody else wants to get their 2 cents.
Thanks again Cheez
