Hai,

As the title says, I suspect my GPU (Ati Radeon HD4870) has died. Recently during gaming (mainly minecraft..) my GPU started artifacting and then freezing causing the entire PC to freeze and forcing me to reboot. This happened a few times in a row so I decided to stress test my GPU in Furmark and well, this is what I saw before it froze again:

After which I get the following screens:

At first the PC would try to reboot it self with those artifacts still on the screen and fail at it, then reboot itself again, this time without the artifacts and just start up perfectly. Then after a couple of more Furmark tests it finally ran stable again but unfortunatly this didn't last too long..

Now since recently my PC ended up in a loop of not being able to boot up and those artifacts never went away!

Now though, things have gotten even worse, it won't boot at all! Whenever I turn the PC on the fan goes to 100%, it makes a beeping sound and the screen stays black. Also there are 4 leds on the back of the GPU. In my case LED D1601 is burning, which according to the interwebs means: D1601 - Red LED On, shows critical temperature fault

So did my GPU die or is there still some hope of it coming back to life?

Did you clean out the fan and heatsink, before you fried it with furmark?

Yes I did. Also, the GPU worked for a bit again after a couple of reboots and furmark tests only to fail a day or two later..(Edited that into the story now aswell)

So I don't really see how I fried it? It actually failed eventually while playing Minecraft..

Yeah wasn't saying that running Furmark necessarily made it fail, although it does cause some high temps which won't probably help. Sounds as though it is "dead" though, my old 8800 went out in a very similar way unfortunately.

Problem is that it really never got to the high temps. As soon as I put any sort of stress on it, it would fail.

that's because it is fried, happend to my last mobo, one of the chipsets fried and would fail as soon as stress was put on the computer, i.e. repair disk or trying to load windows, etc. Got so bad it wouldn't work in bios and just fail.

Ok makes sense, but what do you make of this: at first it would fail as soon as I put stress on it. Then for some reason it started working again, was able to make it run Furmark for 15 minutes without crashing or ridiculously high temps (for HD4870 standards) and only recently it crashed again and really crashed good.

Does that really sound like a fried chipset?

yeah it really sounds like it's dead.  try the oven trick as a last ditch method?  who knows, maybe it'll work

looks a lot like faulty on-board RAM of your video card. had something similar happen to my 4870. it's a goner, imo.

Never heard of it, will google it.

Anyways thanks for the confirmation, though I didn't really want that confirmation in the first place!

Update:

Did the oven trick and the card actually works again! Can withstand furmark test again, although I only did 1 min tests so far. Haven't been able to run 3dMark yet since that won't start up for some reason..
