Ok, here is the deal. I can play BF3 on low-med, but I would like to eventually play on a higher graphic setting. Here is what I have now, I need to know what processor and vid card I should look at getting that wont cost an arm and a leg. Thanks.

GIGABYTE GA-EP45-UD3P
GeForce 9800 GT OC 1GB 256-bit GDDR3
OCZ ModXStream Pro 700W Modular High Performance Power Supply
Intel Core2 Duo E7500 Wolfdale
G.SKILL 4GB (2 x 2GB) 240-Pin DDR2 SDRAM DDR2 1066 (PC2 8500)

This is in an Antec Sonata 2 case, so air flow is not the greatest/

well i can't be much help but i play on mostly high and it's a little old so you can use mine as a benchmark:

MB: Asus p5nd

Ok, so I am putting together a new system. Here is what I have so far.

i5-2500K
MSI P67A-G43 mainboard
8GB G.skill Ripjaw X
NZXT Gamma case

I plan to reuse my 700W pwer supply and hard drives. I will have to get a SATA DVD drive too.

What type of Video card should I look at that wont kill my budget, I would like to stay around or under 750 if possible. I am sitting at about 490.00 right now having added an aftermarket cooler for the i5, a couple of case fans, and the DVD drive.

Thanks

How old is your previous build?
Honestly, within 3 months I had 3 parts fail, first was my mobo, so i upgraded, then 2 from my old PC build fail when I reused them in my new i5, z68 mobo, 8gb ddr3 upgrade, got a new case too. Had to replace harddrive (1 week after new build), powersupply(about a month, or two?).

My old build was >5 years old, I recommend a complete replace if it is that old or older.

The only thing I have left in my new PC recycled  are a CD drive and DVD burner, which are both noisy as hell and need to be replaced (at $20 bucks these days why not?)

My last build was in July of 2009, so I would hope the PSU has a few more years on it.

PSU will be fine, like link says 560Ti is pretty baller, should be able to do BF3 some justice up to 1920x1200. If you need some more grunt in future, you could always add another. i5 is great too, and the mobo looks good also.

Is 100.00 worth the difference between a 550Ti and a 560Ti when the max res I will be using is 1440x900? I can pick up an Asus GTX550Ti for 129 before mail in rebate.

So here is what it looks like I may build, once I get the wifes final approval on finances. Let me know what you all think, and if I should change anything.

Clearly, the 60 is a lot better than the 50, it's up to Canin to decide if the FPS is worth the $$$.

the amount of ram is more important for different resolutions, rather than the card, is it not?

Considering they both have 1GB, no, and the RAM only helps when at 1920x1200 and comparing 512MB to 1 or 2GB. 512MB is fine for 1680x1050 and below, generally.

thank you, mr. obvious. read his post again. Canin knows the 560 > 550. he asked if the price difference was worth it on 1440x900 display.

your pretty charts do indeed show 560>550, but they show results for 1680x1050. why is resolution important? do the math, it's less pixels per second, and why i said "no, not @ that resolution".

perhaps you would be willing to give him the $100 to make up the difference?

Do you not think it may have been obvious that a higher series card would be better than a lower series one? I know he knows it's better. If I wanted to show purely that "550>560" then I would have shown the higher resolution graphs, which depict my point even better. I purposefully linked the lower resolution ones as they were more applicable to his situation. The reason I showed 1680x1050 is because nobody does anything less, and the jump from 1440x900 -> 1680x1050 isn't even worth noting. You'll get the same FPS on both (give or take).

I presume Canin came here looking for facts and advice, not opinions with nothing to back them up. Let me show you the difference:

Blind opinion:

13urnzz wrote:

Opinion with proof to back it up

Finray wrote:

I disagree

Clearly, the 60 is a lot better than the 50, it's up to Canin to decide if the FPS is worth the $$$.
I then went on to say that we can't decide for him, because we don't know how much value FPS compared to $. So by giving the facts and letting him decide himself, he can feel safe he made a sound decision, not just blindly following someone's advice on the internet.

Would this card http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814133417 be worth the money being a recert and only having a 90 day warranty or would you guys recommend something with a longer warranty?

Or would I be better off going with this http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.a … 6814130660

Or should I mix AMD and Intel and look at a 6870 card in the same price range.....

I forgot what a PITA building a system was when you dont keep up with the tech for a while.

Easily!
I still use a 470W PSU from 2005.

Just check the specs.
They usually calculate those values with a machine with 5 HDDs, 3 DVD drives and dual GPU.

If you're really going for power-hungry hardware, just do a rule of thumb estimate of all the components' cumulative power consumptions.
