Recall that GTA IV was originally slated for an Oct. '07 release, but was delayed to April '08, in what I think was some porting issues for PS3 or something along those lines. It was still in the earlier days of the "next-gen" consoles, and you can tell as the game still has that "next-gen shine" to its graphics, and the companies were still testing the waters. Secondly, the DLC packs where limited X360 exclusives (Microsoft payed $50 million to ensure this exclusivity to boost Xbox 360 I'd imagine. Sony had a similar agreement with Rockstar with the GTA III era games where they would be released on PS2 first for set limit, and when GTA III hit the shelves a lot of people bought a PS2 for that game) but they were released on PC at the same time the PS3 got them._j5689_ wrote:
I hope they decide to release the (stable) PC version alongside the console versions with GTA V instead of 8 months later and unplayably laggy and crashy without several patches
GTA IV for PC took a long long time to get where it is, even after they patched all that initial stuff, it didn't even get the DLCs until much later when they were both already out on the 360. I'm thinking this probably shouldn't happen this time around now that the majority of people are hip to the console favoritism bullshit and plus Rockstar knows how to use both Steam and Games for Windows - Live as distribution platforms now
GTA IV for PC was handled by an entirely different studio (Rockstar Toronto) but it definitely felt rushed and the port was highly unoptimized to run on current-gen systems at those times (ie the game almost required a quad-core processor when most people where still running dual-core setups) and the lack of SLI/Crossfire support ruined the experience for many. However, by the third and fourth patch, the game was finally stable and playable on most systems. Today's current version (patch 1.0.7.0) is fine and playable, but it still feels like they really abandoned a half-finished PC port of a game - there are a lot of little things that could/should of been fixed, but it seems they just left it to modders to figure out. Meh.
Rockstar Leeds seems to be the new PC developer, as rumor has it they are hiring PC programmers, and were responsible for the LA Noire PC release which was, from what I've heard, pretty successful although I've never played the game. Perhaps they'll be tasked with the GTA V port and it won't be a mess during release.
Nothing solid yet - some are saying a Q1/2 2013 release, while others are hopeful for a Q4 2012 release.justice wrote:
Any ideas of a release date yet?
