well i'm probably going to be in the market for a new laptop here shortly. my macbook pro has been awesome to me for 1.5 yrs, but i think i need to get rid of it and get something more suited for gaming/poker since i don't want to travel with my desktop. what should i be looking for as far as graphics go? i want it to be able to run bf3 on low/mid settings, have a backlit keyboard, be able to install an ssd easily, high resolution, etc. i would like to keep it under 1k if possible. tyty

no backlit keyboard, but i have this

IdeaPad Y470 Laptop - 08552DU

It works really well, can run Skyrim on high so I'd assume could play BF3 quite high, has about 9 hours of battery life and I'd definitely recommend it

Would say HP but I know you dislike that brand. My friend has an ASUS that runs BF3 just as well as my HP so you should look into that brand as well.

I love my Vaio E but it's getting abit dated now and Sony's other models are kinda pricey...

Not necessarily true - when you think about how many laptops nowadays have the ability to swap GPUs depending on your power profile and a fast Intel processor at a low clock speed is still faster than an Atom, then you can easily have both. The only real trade-off is in terms of weight and size.

I've picked 2 for the past 3-4 years with no issues.

I use my current 17 inch HP laptop to game/study/watch movies/surf forums/talk to people etc + it fits in my Jansport backpack no problem. The ability to easily carry around a computer that can run games this well is a huge bonus. Instead of a tower that has to stay in one place and isn't easy to move around.

well i will also have a 24" monitor, so screen size of the laptop isnt too important. asus, dell xps, and vaio are my top 3 choices atm. dont really want to go with hp, but i could possibly be persuaded that direction

I'd recommend the Dell XPS over the ones listed. You won't come in at under 1k, though.

If you're intending on using it as basically a desktop, just easier to travel, not thought of making a "LAN box"?

Or do you actually need to use it's screen and stuff when gaming?

pretty sure they created a new engine for skyrim.  theyre both pretty demanding games, that laptop has a 550M which has never had a problem for me with anything at all.

Skyrim is powered by Bethesda's own Creation Engine which is the company's new engine. Bethesda has officially stated that the engine will be used at least in one more project apart from Skyrim.
According to Gamebryo's WIKI Skyrim uses Gamebryo like Morrwind, Oblivion, Fallout 3 and Fallout New Vegas before it... Don't know if "Creation" is what Bethesda calls their modification of it or if one of the WIKI pages are wrong...

If you're trying to stay under 1,000 that's about the best you can do without buying a refurbished one like I did. If you're willing to spend a little over 1,000 maybe you can find a nice once that's slightly more powerful on ebay. I paid $899 for my refurbished HP with these specs, so you figure it out and see if you can do better.

My friend has an ASUS and they work just as well as any HP.
