did they include SOPA just so that they could drop it and have PIPA pass with less drama is the question.Turquoise wrote:

with two of the most visited sites on the internet down, as well as many other massive sites putting up large information posters. i sincerely doubt that. maybe a lack of outcry from the ignorantRoc18 wrote:

Why are Wikipedia and reddit going offline tomorrow?
Never mind, just read an article about it. I thought they were getting shutdown but it's only a sign of protest.

Pick one
Maybe we'll see a few facebook/twitter outcries about it but nothing will happen.
because no-one visits reddit right? just because it's a shithole doesn't mean people won't notice. and stop posting that 4chan shit in this section.Roc18 wrote:

I would think if reddit is going offline as a symbolic protest against SOPA they are pasting that fact all over the place, as to not confuse people that they've either been shut down or are experiencing technical problems. So the complaining an outrage should be limited to the people who aren't really following this whole thing (ie the ignorant, as churchill said)FatherTed wrote:

House version vs Senate version vs modified Senate version. Check the dates and context of the posts to which you are responding, Turq. I know you've been gone a while, but damn...rookie!Turquoise wrote:

Pretty sure the US just passed indefinite military detention of American citizens without charge or trial.
If they will pass that, SOPA should be a forgone conclusion.SUBTITLE D. SEC. 1021. (p. 655)
(e) AUTHORITIES.—Nothing in this section
shall be construed to affect existing law or
authorities relating to the detention of
United States citizens, lawful resident aliens
of the United States, or any other persons
who are captured or arrested in the United
States.
SUBTITLE D. SEC. 1022. (p. 657)
(b) APPLICABILITY TO UNITED STATES CITIZENS
AND LAWFUL RESIDENT ALIENS.—
(1) UNITED STATES CITIZENS.—The requirement
to detain a person in military custody
under this section does not extend to citizens
of the United States.
It seems a bit odd for the ACLU and a multitude of news sources from various political leanings to suggest that the NDAA indefinite detention clause does apply to citizens.
It seems odder still that Carl Levin and John McCain, the two sponsors of the clause, would argue on the Senate floor in favor of the clause by defending its application to citizens. Also, Levin has stated that the purpose behind the clause was to include citizens, since the White House requested it specifically after seeing that the first version didn't include citizens.

You can still get into wikipedia through google. It only blocks you if you go to wikipedia.com. Who the hell goes to the wikpedia front before looking for something?
I clicked on a wiki link through a search engine and it showed the wiki page for a split second before switching to their protest page...

Dunno how this is supposed to stop piracy. People can still share music on networks just like people used to sell bootleg tapes and cd's. There's a little asian lady that walks up and down the main street here selling hundreds of bootleg dvd's. Even the gas stations stock the bootlegs for $5 a pop. Fuck these inbred congressmen.

No, I think the record and movie companies genuinely believe that this will put money back in their pockets. Idiots.Turquoise wrote:
