I said I have a problem with the American women, they all care what job their boyfriend/prospective husband has. They want him to be earning 6 figures and/or rich parents. It's quite sad really.
My girlfriend doesn't care that I have no job right now, she only cares that I look for a job and that I'm happy. She doesn't care if I make £60,000 a year or £20,000 a year. That's the difference. as much as i'm happy that camm is maybe getting married (still haven't read if he proposed yet/she accepted) i do think that taking the plunge at such a young age is generally a bad move. screw all the material/money bullshit, you're still young and have a lot to enjoy before you need to settle down. what's the difference between marrying her now and marrying her in 5 years?

I can appreciate Jay's opinion and honestly agree with it in many ways. I've had friends who have rushed into marriage considering it on face value, I've seen it gone tits up. Friend of mine got engaged with him promising to work while she studied and subsequently swapping so he could study while she worked. The first part happened then she buggered off.
But then I remember that my parents married at 22. They were both working but far from financially secure. But it didn't matter and it's not like they suddenly settled down into the family way, they travelled and worked and lived their lives together. They didn't think of starting a family until their 30s, they didn't even settle back in NZ until after my sister was born. Seemed to work for them though, they've had tough times but they're still together, they successfully raised two kids and are living a very comfortable and successful life together in a million dollar beach-front house overlooking Wellington Harbour. So they must have done something right. Either way nothing much was determined by how and when they got engaged or married.
So fuck it Camm, go for it. Do something stupid or hilarious with your proposal too. My naked bungie-jumping suggestion is still on the table.
