The first part is finally coming later this month, now they need the nominations for the mod to be put on Steam.

And for those who don't know, this is basically a complete recreation of Half-Life 1 in the Source Engine as a mod, it's been in the works since 2004 and people thought it would never come but now they're releasing the first part on September 14th

Yeah, isn't that what Steamworks or whatever is for?

They can't legally sell Black Mesa. Greenlight is for indie games. Actual games. Not mods, however detailed or totally converted they may be.

As far as I can tell, Half-Life 2 doesn't have Steamworks so it can't work that way.  Although I'm now seeing a few mods when you search for it in Steam so I think that's how this is going to appear.

There's a lot of other free games on Greenlight too

Greenlight is about adding your game for sale on steam. There is a whole mods section of steam for mods such as black mesa. Not even close to related.

Then I don't know, we'll have to see how this goes.  I would personally prefer if it was something you could just download through Steam and have always updated and I'm hoping that's what happens with this

I thought they added support for mods on Steam some time ago.

That's how they should work, I think those mods on Steam only direct link you to the site where you get it and then you have to get them to appear in Steam that weird way

That's how it's coming up for me, there's no actual download button for the mods, it takes you to the website, then you download and do something to get it to appear in Steam.  This how it is for all the Half-Life 2 games I searched for.  Maybe it's just me, I don't know

That particular one doesn't but there's a bunch of others that do when I search for Half-Life 2, I guess it's just different with some but it should all be the way that one works

well that's weird, but it's certainly not a major mod release.

Black Mesa is a big deal. People have been waiting a long time for it. Valve is well aware of its existence and importance. I don't see it having any difficulty receiving steam support unless valve want to distance themselves from it. In any case greenlight should make no difference whatsoever. Greenlight exists to show valve that small indie games have big enough followings to be profitable on the steam store. There is really no point in listing a mod on it, especially a mod as major as black mesa.

At the time, it was free for them to list it(as of some point in the last two days it's $100 to prevent abuse by douchebags uploading "Episode 3" and sex games, lol) and they probably weren't sure about how to actually get it put on Steam so it makes sense that they did it this way even if it wasn't necessarily the completely correct way

They made it, the game has been officially "Greenlit":

It's cool that it'll be on Steam. I doubt it'll be on Steam day 1 though. There is a very short time between it being green lit and it's release.
