My main complaint that I see in BF2 is not based on the game, not on the physics or the occasional glitch, it's with how a quasi-realistic Battlefield simulation offering the elements of real combat that go so sadly unused by players.
There's this concept of communication on the battlefield (IRL) that is sadly underappreciated by the majority of players. Every current & former soldier I know will attest to the fact that there is a constant stream of information flowing between a squad, a platoon and so on.
BF2 offers people the chance to use VoIP within their squads and also up to the commander as is the case IRL but I find that it is a feature that's rarely used, and when it is, the comms tend to be of an "Ohhh Shit....." nature and not overly meaningful to anyone listening.
It's also been my experience that when people get into squads & focus on a common objective, the TEAM wins and chances are, so do the individual players by being able to back eachother up and score in a meaningful way.
A few tips (though I'm not an expert, these might help)
- EVERYONE...Invest the $20 in a headset with a mic. Not only can you hear in stereo (hear foot steps or peeps on ladders) AND avoid the "Turn that down" complaints of your loved ones but you can also try talking instead of hitting Q for a limited comm
- COMMANDERS...Your squads are your hands/fists. Your job is to develop a strategy, lay it out to your squad leaders quickly and then provide orders usine the Map AND VoIP. Even if you don't give them waypoints on the map, at least let them know with VoIP the overall "look" of the battle. You're busy but you see it all and can help them make you a winner in the round !!
- SQUAD LEADERS...Get orders from the commander. If he's reluctant, then set your own objectives. Using VoIP you can outline a basic plan and as it unfolds, make adjustments to the team (hoping the listen). Remember, if your squad & you work as a team then you can flank, feint and win better than 6 LoneWolves.
- SQUAD MEMBERS...Try to listen to the Squad Leaders. Remember, this is a team effort. If you don't want to listen then just play LoneWolf. No shame in that. Remember, squads are a team and more powerful working together than each person playing Rambo.
- LONEWOLVES...Make yer own squad if you can and then lock it if you wanna play solo. But if you can, try to occasionally chack in with the commander to see if there's something you can do to help (Or be helped) by him. I'm thinking mostly SF or Snipers here but again, if you can, form a squad of your own, at the least you can beg for UAV, Arty or Supplies when yer out there all alone.
Now that's just my simple rant about using VoIP. Obviously I could elaborate but those are the basics. If it's any inducement, I've found that teams using VoIP have more Wins, Kill/Death ratios go up, people can rotate kits and earn more badges that way & in the end, you develop a rep as being a good player, not just a great killer.
