Which way do you lean compromising between Graphical Detail v. Visual Acuity (aka: Pretty v. Points)?

This topic reared its head in the previous post Longest Confirmed Kill By A Sniper and I was interested to see how players (more specifically snipers) prefer to have their machines set up.  Before I get flamed, yes, I understand that most players probably aren’t running uber computers with video cards in SLI or even a machine with a single high end card. So, please, if you have a card that is pushed to the limits at low settings (i've been there) don't get over excited about this post.  If you had a high end card which do you think you would prefer?

My preference is to run as high as I can while still getting a good frame rate.  I was running on low settings when I first got the game and then bit the bullet with a graphics upgrade.  I found the difference to be huge and haven’t gone back to my previous settings.  I really enjoy the shadows and lighting effects, the game ambiance just feels better to me.  I don’t mind not seeing enemies 500M+ off. Typically if I don’t see them, they won’t see me.  There is a part of me that is tempted to see if I could hit at 500+ consitently though.

So what’s your opinion?  Would you rather have rich environments or the ability to see targets at further distances with the opportunity for higher points?
My vote? Pretty over Points!

I got everything on low detail.
Points >>> Pretty

I would hate getting killed just because the game isnt running fast enough.

I m the kind of guy who always edited his cs config to make the game brighter so he could see everyone in the shadows (no cheats or sth).

I notice the same thing and totally agree.  I have a "good" system and card but, I run all the setting on low so I can be alittle faster.  I notice a difference with points.   Points>>>Pretty  I figure you can kill people or look really pretty when you die.

Haha - that's one way to look at it!

I'd just hate myself if I dropped my settings to low after upgrading my card...ugh!

I wasnt aware that having low settings allowed you to see further. I play with everything on high... I've found, though, that having a high resolution is most important when sniping, whether you have high settings otherwise or not, since you can see the real outlines of people more clearly...

I'm the kind of guy who played CS with default brightness and still kicked your ass with just a pistol.

I have a mix of medium/low. I always get a bit of a performance hit when looking through the scope, which annoys me somewhat. I suppose I could put everything on low, but I want the graphics to at least look half decent.

I've been killed sometimes because of the framerate drop of switching to scope, and it's sluggish..  or missing a moving target because of the sluggish performance.

I want a decent sense of immersion when I play a game like BF2.

I don't run anything above medium, really, because I don't notice any visual difference between medium and high settings for most of them. Anti-aliasing has to be at least 2x tho, jaggies are a pain in the ass.

You couldn't beat the deagle in 1.3. It was my primary and I used an MP5 or M4 as backup. I've always been one for being bad-ass over getting a high score... Interestingly I've always gotten the score in pursuit of just kicking ass. I just love killing...

I use a mix of high and med settings, I can get good fps that way, it rarely drops below 40 no matter what, usually staying at 60-100.  When I run special forces I usually drop everything to low though, its a lot easier to see on city maps and I can get a stable 40 fps if not higher nearly all the time.  The thing I don't like about lowering graphics, you can't see flashes when someone shoots.  This can be very bad if you are in a tank or chopper.

so what are "optimal" draw distance, or seeing distance settings then?
because it annoys me having bought a pretty damn decent machine and being sight limited by "fog" or whatever c what's the best settings.. i have everything on maximum and don't go below 70 fps so whatever is good for distance i want it

I got everything on High 2x AA ... and I got a 6600 gt everything is smooth, never laggy ...

Again, I wasn't aware you could really change the draw distance (past whatever the max in-game setting is). If this isn't the case please let me know. Now, generally, though, I can tag people who are barely visible in the fog. The further the draw-distance the better.

How do you have everything on high with 2x AA? You must be running in a low resolution or something (<1600x1200).

1280x1024 - high all 4x AA, Max draw, Max texture etc.. with forced 16x AF... /me wants better draw distance.. should be an option for higher system instead of being coded out

and for the love of god! MAKE IT DUAL SCREEN COMPATIBLE! 2560x1024 in bf2 would be beautiful for making widescreen movies and stuff.. ah well, net/music/msn/eve on one bf2 on the other,

everything on low with light off, there is nothing better than shooting a guy who thinks he is in a dark corner of construstion site on sharqi, when in reality he is lit up like 4th of july.

100% view range... Medium Everything (No AA or Filtering)... About... 30fps average on my OCed 9600XT.

I can hit the "ultrabrite" button on my monitor (a Viewsonic CRT) to instantly ramp up my brightness if there are dark patchy areas I can't see or if I'm getting massive glare (it helps a bit)... but I've never found dark areas to be a problem for me.

30 fps is about enough for me. Higher FPS would be nice and all, but I find that the detail helps me get absorbed a bit easier (I'm not in the ultra-kill mode I used to be when I played CS years ago) as well as spot muzzle-flashes, etc... which are essential when you need to peg them.

So long as it works.

Well here it is, I was sniping one guy and got a shot in im. By the time I was ready to finish him I saw him desappear in my scope. So this was my draw distance limit I guess, it was at 375m since I had a good view of tha flag. Any way to get a better draw distance?

I run everything on high and the shadow rendering and some other rendering on low. I get a constant 90-100+ FPS (FRAPS flickers between 101 and 102 constantly, never more. I assume that's over 100), pretty textures, max viewing distance but good acuity because of the low shadow rendering and the other rendering setting. I don't think it has made the game any less "pretty", but helps me spote minute movements at range, which is helpful for sniping, flying jets/helis and gunning a heli.

I've got a 6600GT (moving to my SLI 6800GS soon) and I can't run decently at those settings. Not sure how this guy is. Anyways, at the moment I'm mostly at all medium settings and have been thinking about lowering some. I my not have to though once I go SLI with the two 6800GS cards. We'll see.

I like all settings on high with no lighting or shadow because not only do shadows and lights lag up everything they also make it harder to see people somtimes. I rather be able to see people way better than have a more realistic lighting setup

Edit_I got a x800xt aiw(520/560) if it matters
