So I got a joystick finally so I can try to be a pilot. I loaded up a single player match and hopped into a jet. Wow they are fast. It only takes a few seconds to get from one side of a map to the other. Are dog fights done at full throttle or should I take it down a notch? I was too chicken to try it online.

You turn faster with Afterburners, that way you can evade missles even when you cannot deploy flares at the moment

Dude, you're doing the right thing by practicing OFFLINE first before getting online and laying down some carnage! Keep working at your skills offline, then go online and do some real damage.

most dogfights are done at nearly full speed but remember to also make some nice breaking manouvers from time to time, i got rid of fighter jets while in a bomber several times with that technique.
also op cleansweep is the only map in SP with jets but good to learn the basics how to spot a jet and how to follow him, also because its with bombers so the speed isnt that high.
another thing would be to bind the backward view to your joystick so you can see if you are beeing followed and its good to train bombing runs.

Amen to that, I have the same joystick, and its unbelievable how all those buttons come in useful .  Plus its really good to fly with, just remember paul, dont use all your flares at once, throwing your plane into breakneck turns is also the way to get rid of missiles

I just wish I could use the Joystick when trying to "Spot" something, or relay a message to the team like I can in a tank or even a BH/Cobra.

Maybe I just dont have the right buttons set up?

Because I have to reach for my mouse when I have the hud up to click something to say "Enemy jet spotted" or whatever. Trying to tell the other pilots (Choppers and planes) to watch out.

Does your Stick have a top hat? See if you can bind that to the look function.
When playing Mouse+KB hitting Ctrl and using the mouse lets you look around, you might be able to get the tophat to work the same way.

I'm thinking about getting the Saitek X52. I've always been a hardcore flight, Heli and Mech Sim player *worked at a place called Slamsite back in the day, can we say free Battletech in the Tesla pods? I racked up over 150+ hours on that thing*

At any rate, the X52 is all digital, so can be bound to ridiculous amounts. the only thing I don't like on it is the twist, I prefer rudder style like on the X45.

To see them click on

They are pricey, but well worth it.
Heck tomorrow is my B-day, and I take my Appraiser Exams today...if I pass, I might just have to get that tomorrow as a little present to myself

Faith, think about it. You spot a jet, you transmit the message to the team:by the time it will take them to react, the jet will be at another corner of the map. i mean those things fly fast, they are not sitting ducks. not like infantry they aint.

Can't be bothered to point out whats wrong with that.  I think maybe I'm in bad mood...perhaps I should lie down for a while and come back happier.  Yes I'll go and seek my inner warm fuzzy self.

I just got a chance to watch it mort. That was great man! I love the first part about the BH in the old style of film. That was funny. Great work. Do you have a background in audio/visual?

If its a chopper - and you have someone coming behind you after a bombing run they can line up and shoot it down with their guns.

If its another plane you can let your buddy know if they havent gotten a lock on them that someone is trailing them with bomb mode on rather than air lock on.

If its a BH you can take it out again if you spot it because its on your map for everyone.

Thats why it would make sense.  Not only that the guys on the ground may want to know if a BH or Cobra is incomming.

You should be.
It's highly likely that you'll get team-killed or sniped out of the cockpit a lot of the time.

You have to learn the rules of the game and then you have to play better than anyone else.

Uh, you do know that post is more then two years old?
Indeed, and so is the game, so it's all valid and functioning.

Planes aren't fast, they are way too slow IMO, after being a pilot whore for so long I wish I could actually fly them at some real speeds
