It is probably too late for this, but it would be really cool if BF2 would distinguish somehow between kills you earn in a plane, chopper, armor vs. kills you make in a particular kit?

For example, the fact that kills in armor count towards a kit's combat badge seems weird.  I think the kit combat badges would be much more special if you actually had to make the kills outside of vehicles (maybe using the machine gun in a tank, apc, or jeep-like vehicle would count).  Seriously - it was kind of challenging for me to get my veteran engineer combat badge - I still think I picked up a handful of kills in armor to go along with hand grenade kills, AT mine kills, and kills with the Jackhammer.  But I think I ended up in that round with more kills than I needed, and the number of kills I got outside of a vehicle was more than enough to qual for the badge.

I think this would really help create better identities for all the players.  This way, when you see a guy with his veteran or expert badges, it will mean that he earned them primarily pounding the ground as opposed to bombing, being a helo gunner, etc.

I'm not knocking the armor guys and the pilots.  I think they should have badges and stuff for kills that they earn in those vehicles (they do).  I mean, I know this game isn't supposed to be a simulator, but this idea would inject some "real-world" realism without taking away from game dynamics.  After all, a 0311 (grunt) in the Marine Corps wouldn't earn his Bronze Star with Combat "V" by dropping bombs from a jet or by shooting a tank's main gun.
