Might make it a little faster, but the performance depends on your PC specs. So, it'd be nice if you'd list them.

It  plays smoother than my friends xp box, and hes got 2gig ram and a better vid card.

It pisses him off to no end, too :-)

Ok -bf2-insane.  First you don't give us much info to work with. If you expect us to give you an intelligent answer please give us the information to provide you with one.

Second if you are for some reason looking for an affirmative to your first question, Yes probably a defragmentation will speed up access to your harddisk making read times faster and hence your game less choppy during loading. However most of the graphics of the game are uploaded into Memory and are processed by your video card. Not as much is going to your harddrive as you think.

Defrag. Then run Adaware. Search on google for it. Its free. Perhaps even do a virus scan. Then after that make sure all applications are turned off. Do not start anything. Not teamspeak, not xfire, not Aim or YahooIM or whatever. Nothing.

Just start the game and see how it runs. If it still runs poorly then its most likely your hardware. In which case if you tell your specs for your computer we might be able to tell you where the bottle neck is.

You have to help us help you.

Well lets start with going to your Control Panel -> System Icon -> General TAB.

Now copy and past the info you see there here. It should list your OS, processor, memory in the most basic form. A more detailed spec would be how much memory and what kind you have. What speed your processor is at. Your video card model. etc.  But we starting simple.

General Tab where is says Computer: and then lists info.

Now for you video card you would click on your Hardware Tab. Then go down to Display Adapters. Click on the little plus sign to expand it and then tell us what is listed there as Video Card Driver. It will probably be the card model.

I knew my experience in a Tech. Help Desk Tier 3 support would come in useful elsewhere.

Yea what Agent said.

But also right off the bat I notice what your problem is. 256 meg of RAM.
This is way too little for BF2. Many of us on here have 2 Gigs of Ram. Which is about 8 times as much RAM as you have currently in your computer.

I would consider buying more RAM. Looks like you need to do some research on what kind of RAM your computer takes, how many slots it has for RAM. And then plead for that EXACT type for Christmas. This will improve your game a large amount.

That is my advice to you.

P.S. Windows XP Home Edition is not as good as XP Pro. ALSO You only have Service Pack 1 on that computer. For god sakes man patch your machine. Visit the Microsoft Site http://www.microsoft.com

And then go to the Support area and Update your machine. You should be on Service Pack 2 and a series of hot fixes by now.

Good luck!

Well, just as a side note and not meant to drag this into the dark lands of Offtopic, I am more like the "Never change a running system" person, I bought my computer February last year and I haven't installed any important patch up to now (just IPv6 stuff I need for testing).
Battlefield is running like a charm. Maybe it could be slightly better, but I consider it too risky to have trouble with any patch having some sort of negative impact on my machine.
And yes, my virus scanner and spyware scanner are up-to-date and being used regularly!
