Found this it may help with the ac97 problems...

I'm having issues with VOIP voice chat and the Realtek AC97, how do i fix that?

The best known method to fix this is currently to go to Start -> Run, type dxdiag, go to the Audio tab and then move the Acceleration slider down to Basic.

Hehe, you guys a funny... can't use mic2 with BF2 huh?!?
Well, you sure don't know what you're talking about.

Double click the soundtab in windows taskbar, click the proberties tab, switch to record (or input can't remember), then click ok. Now it displayes the volume lvl for all the your sound input devices. On the mic volume control you can now select input via. mic2 and mic boost.

And yes, I mostly use VoIP from within BF2, doesnt experience lag when using it (thanksfully).

Hope this small guide helps some of you, and will increase the number of chatter on the battlefield.

I'm pretty sure EVERYBODY who has the Mic 2 problem knows how to switch to Mic 2 or else they wouldn't have figured out that it doesn't work for them.
When I select my Mic 2 as the input device, BF2 switches back on start-up to Mic 1. If Mic 2 works on your computer than I think it doesn't work for me because my Mic 2 isn't a real Mic-in. It's called Line-In 2/Mic 2 and it doesn't have mic boost.
I have to use Muvixer http://www.muvaudio.com/muvixer/ which lets you select a default input and if an application switches it, Muvixer changes back to your selected input. It still doesn't work with Battlefield 2 but it works with Teamspeak.

By the way, I have a Creative Soundblaster X-Fi Fatal1ty.

All your VOIP are belong to us?

I rarely hear anyone using VOIP, and, when I do, I usually get that 'There is a problem with your connection' within a few minutes.

It's not that the VOIP causes it; it's simply that the servers where people do talk all seem to be physically too far away, resulting in high ping.

This is mysterious since I can connect to almost any site with only two or three hops outside of my ISP's network, which is global rather than national. For example, I can connect to almost any US server I've done a tracert on in seven hops, and five of those are internal-network nodes for my ISP.

So why the hell it is I can't play on a further-away-server I don't know; the speed-of-light isn't that much of an impediment, since I'm not ON the moon.

(Note: I'm in the UK.)

[Edit: Added the word 'on'. In capitals. Since it was a dumb error.]

I think a lot of people don't use VOIP because not everyone has a headset/mic.  My friends and I played for months before we got mic's.

Sorry for sounding so negative (in the previous post) and sorry to hear that some people are actually having problems with the mic 2 for BF2 VoIP.
I just miss the battlechatter when playing BF2, regardles be it VoIP or Teamspeak :-(

I got my Speech and Ingame sound seperated with 2 sound cards. Like my headset is plugged in to Soundcard #2 and my Speakers to Soundcard #1. For Teamspeak this works perfect, I hear the voices directly into my ear, and the ingame sounds on my surround set.

Battlefield 2 doesnt support this unfortunnaly, so Teamspeak is much better solution for me. But I do use VOIP, only the BF2 VOIP comes on my speakers, and this is much harder to hear.

I noticed last night that no one was using VOIP on this server. I was talking and talking, the little yellow speaker was coming up. Just talk, it's ok. Well unless your 11, then that hurts the ears.

I do use VOIP only when I'm commanding and something major will happen like losing a base. I'm mainly on team speak though so i dint use it much.

I've had that problem with BF2 switchin to Mic 1 everytime.  I had to ALT+Tab out and switch it back.  Heres a tidbid for you tho:  Most front ports suck and is the #1 reason why you can hardly hear most people on BF2.  The back port I've found is always louder and BF2 will auto select that for you.  Back mic port FTW.

I go through mics faster than a hot knife through soft butter that way.  The longest a mic lasts in my back port is about a month if that long.

I do, but a lot of people never respond.  The most talkitive seem to be the little kids that are like OMG!!!!!  I  GOT A KILL!!!  OMG OMG OMG EVERYBODY!!!  I GOT ANOTHER KILL!!!! OMG OMG OMG!!!  NOO!!!!!!!!!!   I FUCKING DIED!!!!!!  WTF HACKER!!!

Those kids seem to be the most common...not many older people talk back.

BF2 doesn't support my Bluetooth headset, and the server I usually play on uses Voip instead of Teamspeak/Ventrillo.  So I never bother with it.

I think it depends on the server too.  The server I usually play on, which is frequented by a lot of "older" players (some are military veterans), a lot of folks use it.  So when you're squadding up with mostly the same players over and over (older / generally more mature / deeper voices / play the role of a soldier more authentically), you get used to using it.  Every round that I try to keep radio contact going, seems my score ends up higher.  Plus it's just more fun.

I just use the built-in VoIP, because for years we gamers said "wouldn't it be cool if they built the walkie-talkie right into the game" and now they have.  But yeah, for clanning and buddying, Teamspeak and such definitely suits that need.

Seems to me that lately(after 1.3) a lot of servers don't enable voip. Or if it says its enabled, it doesn't seem to work.

P.S. EVEREONE has an accent, except maybe Harpo or  Teller.

I have a mic but for some reason it won't work.  It works outside of BF2 and it even works in the "test voip settings" or whatever its called in audio options.  As soon as i get in game though, no voice.  awesome.

Just the opposite for me-Test voip won't work, but the mic mostly does fine ingame.
