it means The Australian and New Zealand Army Corps. was originally an army corps of Australian and New Zealand troops who fought in World War I at Gallipoli against the Turks, an enemy for whom they had great respect. The ANZACs also fought during WW1 in the Middle East and on the Western Front.

Within Australasia ANZAC came to stand not just for the troops in World War I, but for Australian and New Zealand soldiers in time of war more generally. ANZAC Day is observed annually in memory of those soldiers who died in war.

I would, but its too complicated. It has a lot to do with beaches, rocky cliffs, memorials, walls, poppies, more cliffs, more rocks, machine guns, bad boats, REALLY bad commanders etc.

I had to get up at 4:45 to go to a dawn service (im in cadets). After that, about 30-40 of us went into the city for the parade.

Anybody watch it on TV? I was with the cadets carring the Australian flags near the beginning.

I was wondering who was going to start an ANZAC day thread. I didn't want it to be me.
ANZAC day is also the only day of the year when New Zealanders and Australians will actually show each other respect and actually mean it.

Who here's actually been to Gallipoli and Anzac Cove? I have!
It's an amazing place. I kind of didn't get that feeling that everyone talks about of, to quote many repeditive ANZAC day sound bites "just amazing that these boys came from the other side of the world and died for a war that didn't really effect them etc." I think War films and games have desensitsed me or something. It's still quite something to actually BE in the environment. The first day we went there by sea, (the boat even got beached,) and the next day on foot. Seing the 'Sphinx', (the most prominant feature of that area,) is quite amazing, and all the other harsh terrain the troops had to endure. It is THE most defendable place in the world, yet still the ANZACs gave all they could. Lions led by Donkeys. The high command was next to useless.

Anyway, when there we went to Lone Pine, (famous Australian battlefield amazing the carnage that happned there, but the high command ordered attack after failed attack,) and then to the top of Chunuk Bair, (the New Zealand counterpart where after the hill was finally taken by Colonel William Malone and his men, it was artilleried by the British warships and Malone and many New Zealand and even some British soldiers were killed and the Turks took it back.) We did a spirited Haka in front of the Chunuk Bair memorial.
The whole thing is an amazing story.

Something I suggest to all Aussies and Kiwis is to see the recent Turkish-made documentary on Gallipoli. It's called "Gallipoli", (obviously,) and is narrated by Sam Neill and Jeremy Irons. It played on Anzac day on the History channel. It's brilliant, and gave me more of a feeling of what it must have been like than actually going to Gallipoli and the Western Front ever did.
I still suggest that a pilgramage to Anzac Cove is next to essential for all Australians and New Zealanders.

Here It Is:

ANZAC Day Not Only commemorates the Australian Troops who Arrived in Gallipoli, but Also Reminds Us Of The Courage Shown Of The Many men who Put their Lives at Risk Despite The Certainity that would Die. The Men were forced to Haul themesleves out of 5 foot trenches and Charge at a Turkish Machine Gun & Many enemy troops.

As Was Shown In Gallipoli, the Men were told by a Commander they had to charge, despite an Earlier wave of men being shredded to bits. The Men Ran to another Commander,a General.as the Lines were cut,  who told them he would reconsider the attack. But the man (Archie Leysilles) Arrived Back at the Trenches, missing out on giving the order to the CO of the Trench Attack. He watched them all get killed.

The Poor commander Faced Court for Poor Judgement.

A Honourable Quote Was " How Fast Can You Run? As Fast as A Leopard!!!" The Men In the Trecnches Ran As Fast as Leopards, but It just wasnt enough.....

-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Now We Must Ask Ourselves, what Gave these Men the Courage to Attack, when they knew they were going to Die?

I Believe It Was 2 Main things, aswell as many others.

1. The Pride They had For Their Country. They would perform the Ultimate Sacricfice, all for their Country, the Lands of Australai and New Zealand Respectively.
2. Mateship. It May sound a little Corny, but men were together with Eachother when they died. Thats the way they wanted it. They weren;t Cowards, they could face The GallantTurkish soldiers any day, if they were with their mates.

This Is Why ANZAC Day is Celebrated, so that our men can be Truly Saluted for thei Bravery.
Lest We Forget

By the Way, After Several Months at Gallipoli, the ANZACS, thorugh some GOOD Commanding, managed to Retreat to The Beaches and Sail away, as the Harsh winter was Killing Soldiers.
There were was no Hygeine at Gallipoli, flies swarmed everywhere. This Created illnesses Like Typhoid.

There were in Total 180,000 Allied Casualties, and 220,000 Turkish casualties.

I think I got a briefing from our Aussie LNO on ANZAC day...and he didn't even mention it.
