Pardon me, if I am a noob.  However, I bought a Saitek X45 joystick.  I installed it, etc ... I set it up under primary for controls for the aircraft in BF2.  I tried to fly, and everything was backwards (ie:  right rudder, turned left, left rudder turned right, pulling back on the joystick went down, turning right on the joystick went left, etc ... ).  I browsed Saitek's website and noticed that there is an issue with BF2 that does that, but if you put the controls in the secondary controls it should work just fine.  And it did, right went right, etc ... however, pulling back on the joystick still goes down and pushing up on the joystick goes up.  Well, this is still backwards.  I was wondering if anyone else had this problem or knew how to fix it.  I have the more recent drivers (According to Saitek) and such, but can't figure it out.  Maybe I am just a periphreal n00b, but I don't think so.  Any help would be appreciated, since pulling back to go down is not natural.  Thanks!

**Edit** Stupid typing

Set your values to default and start over.

Check every input in the secondary and reverse those that work opposite of what u want.

So if all but tilt up/down do work, just redo those two.

do joysticks make such a difference in flying jets??? im not bad the chopper with mouse and keyboard... can they be used for hte chopper as well??? are they really worth it?

Maybe you just don't like flying inverted, reset the control for the pitch and set it back up the opposite way. That probably isn't the right way to fix it if there's a real problem but it should let you fly.

And I do believe that flying a joystick helps a lot with a jet, but I've think some people still fly with the mouse. I don't need a joystick to fly helicopters though, I prefer the mouse and keyboard for that.

ok cause i always seem to never be able to outrun a jet because my turns arent sharp enough...

I think joystick helps. I used to fly with keyboard before but not as good as now, specially for the sharp/quick turns. I also had problems while switching weapons...I accidently press E instead of F and you know the rest lol. Well, my setting are working with air-craft but I don't fly choppers, so can't tell. I have saitek EVO and it's awesome ! If you need a screen-shot of the settings, let me know. I will gladly help

Good Luck.

pwned7, it's totally worth it.  you'll never have as much control of any type of aircraft as you will with a joystick.  While flying choppers into the hangar bay on Iron Gator and through the Kubra Dam tunnel may make only marginal tactical sense, I couldn't imagine doing it without a joystick.  The increased control comes from the analog nature of the joystick, and from the resulting "feel" for the aircraft.  Just make sure you get one with a Z-axis (one that twists).

Joker, I had that problem once too, with my Saitek Cyborg 3D USB Gold.  All I had to do to fix it was go back into the controls page & redo all the axes.  When you assign an axis, it doesn't specify which direction does which action.  For instance, JOY AXIS 1 may be listed for both TURN LEFT and TURN RIGHT.  No telling whether JOY AXIS 1-LEFT is actually TURN LEFT, or if it's TURN RIGHT.

Start a server & play against bots.  Experiment by moving the joystick to the right when assigning roll left, etc.  Check out the effect that has on your in-game control, and repeat if necessary.

BTW, my joystick is set as primary controls for all aircraft...

Hope this helps.

Would you mind sending some screenshots, Puppets?  Thanks!  When I setup the controls in BF2, and I click on the "pitch foward" and move my joystick to map it, it automatically inputs both the pitch forward and pitch backward, which is fine, but I do not think that I can tell it specifically what way is "up" and "down".  So I can't really "redo" those two .. or at least, I don't think I can .. but maybe I can fly with out a C4 pack, who knows

The joystick, as much as I have been able to use it, is totally worth it.  It is possible worth it just for the fact you can map camera angles to the hat-switch to allow for very easy camera changes.  Very nice for dogfighting or bombing, I have found.  Other than the fact that I am trying to evade and end up nose diving in the ground because its backwards ...

**Edit** And how come I can't ever leave Karma .. says I have to contribute ... bah

So when you're assigning pitch forward, pull back on the joystick.  If that doesn't work, I don't know what will...

Or maybe try re-calibrating it in Windows.

I think when my roll left/right got switched up that one time, it was registering a tiny bit of left movement when I was clearly moving it right.  Could be wrong though.

also make sure that inverted is or isn't checked for your preference.  Also I believe the yaw factor is if it uses the rudders inverted or not.

What is the options for pitch factor and yaw factor?  they default to 1 and can go up to 10, but what do they control?

Until today, I was (I think) a good jet pilot and I could get pretty good accuracy with my mouse to take down choppers, with the machine gun. The only problem I had is that I couldnt curve sharp enough to avoid aa's.

so after reading all those threads, I decided to buy a Saitek Cyborg Evo. During the first minutes, I sucked hard but I said to myself "Ill get used to it and soon, I'll own with it"... but ive tried it for 1 hour or so thus far and I still suck. The joystick itself works well but... not me lol. I cant get decent accuracy and its almost impossible to destroy enemy tanks with the machine gun. so my question is : how low is the adaptation time ? because so far, I'm a bit disapointed but ill still practice with it and ill see.

for the ones that were in my case, have you become a better pilot even though you were pretty good already  with the mouse?

The funny thing is there is like 3 threads running at the same time on this same topic, one with KB users crapping on Joysticks, and one with Joysticks crapping on KB users, and one thread that is borderline.

At anyrate, what the guys said about reversing the control if it doesn't work right is the correct way to fix that problem. Also joysticks of course perform well at flying, they are meant for that task.

KB + Mouse is poop at jets, but not as bad now that the missles are so easy to shoot others down, but that said, you will get owned by another jet with a joystick.

Choppers - most maps don't require anything radical and KB + mouse is the fastest way to get in the air. Turns are slower and you will have trouble doing some fancy stuff, but it certainly gets the job done no debate about that. Joysticks, in my opinion are better, but I'll tell you there are 95% non-joystick users on this forum and in BF2 all who will disagree with joysticks being better.

All in all, don't fight the issue and use what is best for you, as if you can't get people to stop punishing for teamkills, you have even less of a chance of convincing people to try a joystick that costs real $$ and not milliseconds of their time to press pg up for once.

A usual mistake is to go full throttle trying to outrun an equally fast jet.

If u want quicker turns fall back on the throttle rather than increase it, lower speed makes u take a sharper turn, besides most jetnoobs go full throttle all the time while with practice comes skill to use the throttle on/off when needed.

Experiment a tad and u`ll see what i mean. Nothing like having a jet passing over u in full throttle when u have decreased max for a few seconds, then let the rockets finish him off.

Good luck :-)
